- important information about statins -

Posted by .harp player @amberpep, Aug 10, 2020

Just a bit of information I discovered last week. One of the side effects of taking “simvistatin” is temporary memory loss. It is the only statin that has this effect. I am going to talk to my .doctor about stopping it, with his guidance of course. I have had some short lapses in memory …. forgetting part of my phone number, etc.

@merpreb

@thrushsong – Good morning. I have what is called FH, Familial hypercholesterolemia is an inherited defect in how my body recycles LDL (bad) cholesterol. As a consequence, LDL levels in the blood remain very high – in untreated adults, above 190 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) of blood. Until I tried Crestor for the 4th time my numbers were off the charts no matter my diet, exercise…

I know that you mentioned this is your post. I'd like to stay with lipid number and FH. The advantage that I see in taking Crestor now is that my total score has come down from a bit over 300 to 215, and that's just over a month of taking it. A very low in take of meat is recommended but it doesn't have to be eliminated entirely. Exercise is a big factor in trying to lower your numbers.

Do you exercise a lot?

And yes Merry, I probably spend an inordinate amount of time trying to stay fit and healthy. For exercise, in addition to going at sort of an Energizer Bunny pace in daily activities, I walk daily and with my wife, do a relatively light weight routine 3 x weekly. I do all the food prep at our place preparing low-fat (i.e., no added cooking oils, no fried foods) 100% plant-based with only an occasional processed item like a Boca Burger, et. al.

I weigh less than I'd like to (120 lb's.) but can't seem to gain despite hosing down a daily Orgain pea protein chocolate shake plus eating high fat plant foods like avocado, olives and sinful dark chocolate bars. I think I posted my numbers earlier but in case not: Total cholesterol: 166, LDL 82, HDL 74,Trigs 52

Thumperguy–You've got a great exercise routine! And an HDL of 74 and TGs 52; it doesn't get any better than that!

Yeah, Shame on me, but I do take a ration of quiet pride, mindful of avoiding appearing smug. Don

Sharing experience is what we're about here. You never know who you might inspire. Just watching the Tour de France and the spectacular young athletes has motivated me to keep up my habit of consistent, age-appropriate– I'm 71–exercise. The benefits are endless.

@thumperguy, I'd be fluttering my feathers all over the place if doing your exercise routine! Good for you. Well done! If you find a magic solution or even just one that really works for gaining weight please share. A sought but never diagnosed cause for a 30 lb unintended wt loss for me has me continuing to work at regaining those lost pounds.

@thumperguy and @merpreb, meant to ask about where to buy the Orgain peaprotein choc shake you both mentioned? At 5'8" and for years stable weight of 125 lbs, has made the 30 lb wt loss a real bummer. I have managed to regain 5 pounds over the past 1 1/2 yrs and surprisingly feel well enough just would like more pounds to possibly boost immunity. My pcp said that with my several health issues, weight gain is a complicated affair….hmmmm, I'd pretty much figured that out on my own, right? vbg

Wow! Someone else watches Le Tour de France. My husband and I watch it every morning and to heck with what else happens! We have a banner with the logo on it. Our friend inParis sent it to us several years ago. It hangs over our fireplace. This year was spectacular! We always enjoy the scenery and the commentary. How about the commentators being on two different continents! We were amazed that one young man could win three jerseys at the end. The Race of Truth time trial made all the difference. Yes, so many great athletes make this long ride.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. Watching this year's race cheered me enormously in the midst of the pandemic. the TdF organized the race perfectly to test and prevent the spread of the coronavirus, which thankfully none of the riders got. I miss Paul Sherwen as a commentator. Phil Liggett and Bob Roll did a superb job. Lucky you to have the banner! Pogi, the winner, is an incredible athlete.

The Doc doesn’t express any concern. Without benefit of clothing I think I resemble a tribal African though I do indeed wear more clothes.

Regarding weight, I’ve succeeded in stopping the loss and have slowly regained 3 pounds.

I buy Orgain from Amazon. It’s pricey and probably not worth what I spend on it, but I kinda like the stuff and likely better Orgain than beer and whiskey.😉

Another observation re: weight; over weight has become the new normal.
