Sub-solid nodule grew from 3.5 to 8 in a year: Wait for scan?

Posted by dalelieberman3 @dalelieberman3, May 5 11:45am

8mm sub solid nodule grew from 3-5 to 8 in a year. Pet scan had iffy reports. Should I wait 3 mths for another scan?
It’s in a difficult area to get to in my lung. But waiting has me anxious.
Thoughts?

Hi everyone, I haven’t been on in awhile. I had lung wedge resection & sectomy surgery Mon 7/28. It was cancer, but lymph nodes & margins were clear which is great news. It couldn’t be done robotically cause of difficult location to get to. So I was sliced & diced. Dr went in with microscope since it was small 1.2 cm.
They said 6 wk recovery with first two wks being rough. I am very grateful for the outcome & that I listened to my gut & got 2 nd opinion. First specialist told me to wait 3 mths.
So I have so much to be grateful for, why am I so down in the dumps?
As always, 🙏ers to all of you.

Hi Dale so glad to hear from you and to know that all went well for you with a good outcome. Now you heal and take it easy and let your body do its job, as in healing itself. Take care

Morning! Good new about your results, and I am sorry it had to be a more difficult surgery. Even with the VATS surgery, I went through a little depression. I was so excited I woke up from surgery! I was excited to get home to start recovery! All my family were supportive and caring as well as my co-workers. But… then reality set in when I had to be alone during the day and didn’t (or couldn’t ) have much to do. Also when some of the pains set in, and a lot of the meds were leaving my system. Also the worry of hurting myself but wanting to push myself to get stronger and push through. I believe it’s all very normal, and I also believe if you can stay positive and push for very small goals that increase over time, you will be Good and your mental health will improve. You just went through a major surgery and it will take some time for you to heal both mentally and physically, but Good News… You’re still with us! Try to do little things, that give you enjoyment. Watch funny shows and don’t be afraid to laugh. It will probably hurt a little but you will still feel better afterward. God Bless you and put his healing hands on you! 🙏🙏. When able… Walk, walk, walk. ❤️

Thank you for your reply to my post. It really does help to know that there are people like you that truly understand what I’m feeling., tomorrow will be one week that I’ve been home and the emotions do run high, like a roller coaster that goes round & round with happiness, fear, gratitude, pain, & so on . My family understands somewhat, but their only focus is for me to be off of pain med oxy. Hearing their feelings over & over again just adds stress & impedes my healing.
For today, I’ll try to surpass the walking I did yesterday & focus on my gratitude.
Blessings & prayers to you & everyone in this group.

Even with the VATS SURGERY, I had to wean off of all the meds they gave me. You don’t just wake up a couple days after an even more major surgery and say, “I’m not taking my pain meds anymore”. Family is great and yours sounds like they are worried about that part of your recovery, but they can’t feel your pain. At only a week out, they don’t need to be worried. I’m sure you still need it. If you are worried about the oxy, you can always ask your Dr for a different kind of pain med. When your pain is controlled you feel better, and as you move and do things you heal faster. Did the Dr. prescribe you any other meds? Are you able to take Gabapentin or 800mg Ibuprofen? Robaxin for muscle relaxer? Those are what I went down to after the first week and by the second week the muscle relaxer about twice a day and ibuprofen and regular tylenol were all I needed. You will know when it’s time to wean down. Also, sometimes we just have to tell well meaning family that we appreciate their concerns, but “I got this”❤️ Good luck and keep going!

What did doctor suggest?

Jump to this post

I first went to interventional pulmonologist at Cooper hospital. They suggested I wait another 3 mths to see how things go. He didn’t think it was cancer, but also due to location of it, it was very close to aorta & therefore couldn’t be biopsied. That didn’t sit right with me, thinking if it was cancer it would be growing in me.
So I went to UPenn & saw interventional pulmonologist there. He agreed that due to location it could not be biopsied. He also agreed that it’s a slow growing cancer. And then the clincher for me- he said in his opinion it was 80% that it was cancer & referred me to thoracic surgeon & my surgery was 7-28. It was stage 1A cancer & dr said he got it all so therefore I won’t need treatment. I was so happy with that news.
This is the start of my second week home, it’s a rough time some days, but I hang on that each day will be better….
Wishing you & everyone good health.
Best, Dale

I understand that it is 8 mm, and that in one year it grew by 3.5 mm at the first check-up, and at the second check-up a year later it was already 8 mm.

So yes, it grew from 3 to 5 to 8mm in a year. From early May to mid June it grew to 10mm. From mid June to 7-28 when my surgery was, it was 1.2cm at pathology report.
I think that’s what you were asking. Up to mid June it was mm. At surgery it was 1.2 cm
Still considered very small in medicine world, but in my world I’m so glad this cancer is out of me!
Good health to you & everyone on this site.
Best, Dale
