I am using inhaled colistimethate for the first tume

Posted by lenorj @lenorj, Feb 5 4:15pm

Does anyone have experience with this med? I am being treated for a psuamonous infection. I use Toprmycine first but needed to stop because of ringing in my ears.
Can I use this med with any nebulizer? Any information would be helpful.

Lenorj did you have any symptoms that it was decided to treat pseudomonas or to prevent colonization

The infection showed up as , “few” cell. I had no other symptoms but my Dr. decided to treat it. No other reason as given.

I do the same as Sue - Rinse in Dawn and hot water 5 minutes and boil once each week. I also steam mine in the Bololo during the week. I only use mine for the meds but you can use it for saline or other meds as Sue said. I wish I could use it for my saline!! But I must be a wimp! I found it very intensely salty and have just not been able to adapt to all that saline at once! I love my eRapid!

@carlynic Why boil after using the sterilizer, is that necessary if I do not have any infection that I know of?

I nebulize colistimethate every other month every other day during that month. On the days I'm not nebulizing I take cipro 250mg. My ID doc took this route since I'm so prone to becoming antibiotic resistant. At first I was nebulizing 1.5 ml of colistimethate but that seemed to bother me. That was reduced to 1 ml (which is just a couple of deep breaths) and I seem to be OK with that. Take care my SOB friends!!!

@picartist Please pardon the delay in responding to your question. After rinsing in Dawn solution, I use the Bololo baby bottle sterilizer once a day for all airway clearance equipment used that day - Eflow Rapid, Aerobika, saline nebulizer cups, toothbrushes. But once a week I boil everything instead of using the baby bottle sterilizer. Gives me a chance to clean the Bololo. Pari recommendations are to boil the eFlow Rapid nebulizer for 5 minutes to sterilize. This is just a system that seems to wok well for me.
