Hysterectomy 4 months after FIGO1 Endometrial Cancer Diagnosis

Posted by fos54235 @fos54235, Apr 22 7:46pm

I am 61. Had spotting on 2/4/25. Saw GP on 2/5/25 for PAP. Transvaginal ultrasound results 1.6 CM thickness the following week. D&C on 3/4/25. Pathology report received following week Endometrial cancer FIGO 1. There is only one Gynecological Oncologist in my area & had to wait 3 was for appt. CAT scan & EKG on 4/22/25. Found out today my hysterectomy is not scheduled until 7/10/25. Waiting 4 months for surgery after the pathology report seems too long to me. I am going to try to get in another gynecological oncologists practice 1 hour from my home for 2nd opinion & hopefully get surgery sooner. What are your thoughts on a 4 month wait?

@fos54235 I really understand with these results and what you have already experienced why you feel impatient. If I were in your place I would call the oncologist’s office and ask when your surgery will be scheduled. It’s so difficult to wait and wonder when that call back will happen. Do you think you might call tomorrow and ask?

Please get a second opinion and try to get the surgery as soon as possible even if you have to drive some distance to see the surgeon.

@jc100 I believe this is the second opinion for @fos54235. I'm frustrated that the oncology office has not returned your calls. One other idea. Could you call your referring doctor's office and ask them to call for you? Frankly, I don't think a patient should have to do this but it's one idea I came up with and it's what I would do in your place.

Hello.
My surgery was originally scheduled for April 28 after March 14 diagnosis. They then switched me to May 19. My oncologist said she was comfortable waiting the seven weeks considering it was a slow growing cancer she said during Covid they waited months and offered for me to see a different surgeon or have an open surgery I opted to wait for her. I’ve already received my pathology. Results in the cancer did not spread anywhere. In fact there was only pre-cancerous cells left in my uterus after my hysteroscopy and DNC. I think it is OK for you to wait however it’s not OK for you to stress about it and maybe a second opinion is what you need to ease your mind.

I did hear back from oncologist office and my surgery is scheduled for July 17th but I am on the cancelation list. I am relieved to get this scheduled and to know the oncologist did not see any thing to be concerned about on the PET scan - other than the endometrial cancer. Now the research begins on what to expect after the robotic complete hysterectomy. Thanks everyone for your assistance!

@fos54235 Oh, goodness. I’ve been thinking about you. I’m so glad to hear that the oncology office finally called you back and your surgery has been scheduled. Also, that while the PET scan showed activity in the uterus but that is due to the diagnosed endometrial cancer.

Many of us here in our support group have had radical robotic hysterectomies. I had one in 2019 and it was a same day surgical procedure. The recovery was far easier than I expected. I came home with five tiny incisions covered in small bandages. I was fatigued for a few weeks because I had general anesthesia. I followed all the post-operative recommendations including no driving my car for about a week, picking up nothing heavier than a grocery bag, and walking every day but no lifting weights at the gym as I do strength training. I watched a lot of series and movies on streaming TV while I was resting at home.

@fos54235 It's great that you were on the cancellation list. Your surgery is much sooner and only a few days away. When we hear the word "cancer" most of us want to get the treatment started as soon as possible.

Did you do research on robotic hysterectomy? Here is what Mayo Clinic has on their website:

Mayo Clinic: Robotic Hysterectomy:

That is what I had and my hysterectomy was laparoscopic. It was the same surgery as yours that is scheduled.

Being a bit frightened seems about right to me. When you think about it it seems pretty normal to be frightened as this is not an everyday occurrence for any of us. I was honest with my nurses and doctors and told them I was frightened. I didn't tell all of them that. Just a few and they were compassionate and reassuring. I have found that more I try to hide behind fear and anxiety thinking that no one will know the more frightened I feel. Does this make sense to you?

I am so glad your surgery has been moved up. The waiting is the worst once you know that is the next step. You should be honest about your fears and concerns with your surgeon and the anesthesiologist. They can help to make you more relaxed. I know my anesthesiologist was an angel. Once your pathology report is back and they have surgically staged your cancer, the plan can be developed going forward. Many prayers and positive thoughts for you next week.
