Husband in long term care facility has stage 2 decubitus ulcer. Thethe

Posted by br1cyn @br1cyn, 3 days ago

My husband in long term care facility has decubitus ulcer stage 2 on his buttocks. They didn’t call me as I am his POA. I noticed it one day when he was in the bathroom alone even tho he’s immobile. It was the deepest red! Like fire! Each staff I asked about when etc said something different. It’s been 10 months They brush me off when I ask questions. I’m very concerned about his condition and treatment. As his wife and POA I am allowed to know everything. I’ve asked for daily charting and have not gotten anything. Anyone have these issues with a care facility? I am desperate for answers. I haven’t even been able to talk with his dr

You might contact the Dept of Aging in the state where you live. What you describe is unacceptable, and maybe illegal.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's problems! That care facility doesn't sound good at all! Do call the Dept. of Aging like tsch suggested. That's a good idea. But also contact some other officials like the governor's office, a senator, a local news organization etc. The more involved the better results you may get. You also might consider moving him to another facility or home. Where he is now doesn't sound like they care much about him which is sad and wrong.

The other thing that can really help is God. Just ask God for help and you will get it. God made your husband and loves him. God doesn't want to see him treated badly. Also God can fix him too. I'll say a prayer for both of you.

@pml I have contacted the state. They did go to the facility. However becuz my complaint was anonymous they can’t tell me anything. But I did it becuz of the way they treat both of us. They are downright nasty to me. Every time I complained they either ignored me or came back with their memorized speeches. Now I wish I wouldn’t have been anonymous becuz then if the situation got worse sll I had to do was contact the state. Wasn’t thinking but when you’re so upset it’s hard to keep your head together He’s been gone 3 years and it feels like yesterday to me. I have never get so alone in my life! It’s imperative that I talk to his dr. I can’t find any contact info. I have talked to him about moving but it took him so long to get adjusted I’d hate to disrupt him like that. It would be so much harder since his diseases have worsened. Vascular dementia has. 3 - 5 year mortality rate. Like I said he’s at 3 years and I am terrified. Terrified that Hess gonna forget e and even worse not be able to swallow. He is such a good man. Why did this happen to him. To us. We have been together for 39 years and have never been able to have a moral marriage. And that really sucks!

It sounds like your husband has a bedsore from being in the same position too long. Maybe from sitting but could be from lying down. They can be quite painful and if a patient isn't turned frequently enough in be or is just left sitting in the same chair for two many hours, it will worsen and can become infected. I'd move him because of the way they treat him.
There are bedsore cushions and bedsore bandages https://www.amazon.com/s
Leave a message for his doctor that your husband needs the visit of a homecare wound nurse. Fax it to the home, so there is record of it.

Does the facility have a social worker? It sounds like the situation is very complex, but moving to another facility may be better for your husband and you in the long run. Because you made an anonymous complaint, does that mean you can’t redo it? If abuse or neglect is happening, it should be highest priority to be resolved. No facility can afford be charged or proven to be neglectful or abusive. It seems you hold all the cards.

If you can get pictures of the red spots. Yes, this is from being in one position too long and can become very dangerous if they get infected
There should be some agency or government agency that could help you find a better place for your husband And I would say do this ASAP
Talk to a pastor, your family doctor for a recommendation, but get him out of that facility as fast as you can
I wish you the very best in this stressful time

They do not reposition him! I’ve been trying to get daily charting and they ignore me. I would LOVE to move him but with the combination vascular dementia and Parkinson’s I know it would be way too stressful for him. If push comes to shove. I will do exactly that.
Everything is so twisted and complex. I cannot begin to explain it all. He’s on my mind all the time. In the meantime I’m neglecting what I need to do for myself. There isn’t a day in last 3 years that I haven’t cried. We have never been able to have a normal marriage and now it’s too late. It is so depressing that I on top of ptsd I gave MDD. Sometimes I don’t know what I’m doing from lack of sleep. I am seeing a psychiatrist and counselor. I HAVE to move from the house we lived in for 20 years He owns the house with his brother as joint tenancy. Brother refuses to buy out. It gets even more complicated due to husband being on Medicaid. I just don’t know anymore. I don’t know how much more abuse from brother in law and fighting for my husband I can take.

br1cyn, don't try to physically move him. It is easy to damage your back. The care home worker have special training for this maneuver and even they shouldn't do so without four hands. You might buy the bandage and be ready to apply it if he is already in bed and lying on his side. If you are there when the wound care nurse is there, ask her to write down how often he needs to be turned.
You might find out who the director and/ or owner is. Places like this get sued and fined for bedsores.
I wish you didn't have so many "major depressive" situations. Your determination is remarkable.
There are waffle bed covers, but they can be terribly uncomfortable. There are also waffle and gel filled pillows that might be great if he is sitting overlong.
I'm pretty sure you are going to get this resolved. The law is on your side.
