How to time airway clearance after eating/drinking?

Posted by wonkybronky @wonkybronky, Feb 21, 2023

How long do you need to wait to do nebulizer and Aerobika airway clearance after eating or drinking something? I've been told to lessen ther possibility of aspiration by giving it some time, so I've been waiting a couple of hours.

But, I'm having a hard time fitting in two airway clearance sessions. Clearance before breakfast is too hard. Waiting a couple of hours after dinner makes clearance so late that's it.s hard to sleep afterward.

What are thoughts and advice about this timing thing?

I think I found the responses.
I'm new here and still figuring things out. There can be a couple of conversations on one thread.
The timing is important to me because I have GERD.
If I do my airway clearance around 5 then I have to eat almost right afterwards.

I feel i have the same issue. i can do nebs, but usually only wait an hour to eat. the problem is that im still coughing up mucus until dinner time. Waiting until before bedtime is exhausting.

I neb and do airway clearance after I have had coffee but before breakfast in the morning. I do it before dinner at night. Its usually around 7 am and 5 pm. I don't know if this is right but it works for me.

@sueinmn Sue, what data are you relying on for the statement “Now that the effectiveness of daily airway clearance, especially with hypertonic (7% or 3%) saline, is well-established in limiting the severity of MAI …”?
I am not aware of any study results on the effects of inhaling hypertonic saline on MAI pulmonary disease. I have MAI so if that data is out there I would love to read it. Thanks.

Thanks @cwal. I am familiar with this study. It is certainly interesting, but by its own words is not conclusive, instead stressing the need for clinical trials on the use of hypertonic saline with NTM disease. I believe there is one, maybe two, clinal trials currently underway on the subject. But I am not aware of any clinical trials on the subject with published results. If anyone has different information I would love to know about it. Thanks.
