Hi there! I am just getting started on my bariatric journey and am excited to learn more!

Hi there! How’s it going?

I haven’t had bariatric surgery, but ended up on this forum due to being on a weight loss journey. I’m not sure if it’s the right place for me, but I’ve found some very special people around here. I bet they show up and introduce themselves.

Welcome, the bariatric journey (or any weight loss program) is a lifestyle change and long term. Take your time, research options, ask questions, talk to professional and people who have been through process.

If looking at medical clinics, make sure you choose one that works with you before surgery and after. My surgery was over 10 years ago, and I still go back for yearly rechecks, blood tests and counseling. If I have a problem, I have a contact person to reach out to. I did diet education and a weight loss program prior to surgery at a local clinic with a nutritionist and then had surgery and all follow up at Mayo Rochester. Mayo OK my pre-surgery education at local clinic rather than their pre-surgery education because it was very similar.

Good luck with whatever option you choose.

Hi, I have been waiting to hear about the group meetings I believe are on Wednesdays? I don't know if I am to hear from someone or do I call to set up a time for me to go? I live in Barron and I really can't afford to go to Eau Claire every week. I am sort of getting discouraged about having the surgery since I don't know when this all takes place. I have seen a Nutritionist and Doctor for my beginning exercises.

Not sure if talking about once a month group online meeting or a different one.
The once a month one is for post surgery, see: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/event/bariatric-connections-support-group-9/

If this is a pre surgery meetings, I suggest you call Eau Claire clinic and ask about attendance information.

How are you doing with beginning exercises ?

Hi, I am doing good with the beginning exercises. I have shoulder pain that I am dealing with, but I try to work with the band as much as possible. I have been losing some weight and that is encouraging. I am also learning more about portion control. Sometimes it is hard to make something for one person, and I have had to freeze some of my meals.

I also have shoulder pain and struggle with some exercise. I modify as necessary.

Totally understand issue with cooking for one. Do not want to waste food, but all those leftovers! I try to cut my recipes down to a 2-3 serving size and them either have two days in row or freeze.

One think I do, when buy meat, I subdivide into smaller portions and freeze them in smaller portions. Example, if buy hamburger on sale. I will freeze some in 1/2 lb servings raw, and will brown few pounds and then freeze the browned hamburger in 1/2 lb portions. Then if need hamburger, not using an entire lb. I also freeze chicken breast or pork in individual bags.

It is expensive to eat healthy, but with spring and summer just around the corner, fresh veg will soon be available at cheaper prices.

Thank you for suggesting how to freeze portions. Always did it by the pound. I love making soups with the packaged salads and add veggies and seasonings. I don't mind eating it for 2 or 3 days. Thank you for your advice.

Colleen,
Things are going smoothly. I have had one visit with the dietitian, and have seen both Jackie and Melinda. I had my first weekly group session this week.
Hoping everything continues to go smoothly so I am able to get this done!
Thanks for checking!
Linda
