Has anyone seen an Endocrinologist for osteoporosis?
I had pelvic fractures in July 2025. I am seeing a Physical Therapist. Due to issues with side effects to the osteo medications, I cannot take any of them. I have been advised to see an endocrinologist. I'm not sure what an endocrinologist would do for me. Does anyone know what I might expect from this type of specialist?

@ltfh thank you for your response.
@ltfh Thank you for posting. It gives me some reassurance. I too had high calcium output on the 24 hr urine test ( done twice) and endo. put me on hydrochlorothiazide. I don’t recall hearing anything about low salt though, so good to know.

2 ReactionsI did see an endo for just that. She immediately jumped to Prolia or Reclast. I have Hashimotos and she is keeping track of that. I was hoping she would offer BHRT, but told me she did not prescribe that for osteoporosis. I should have told her I was having terrible hot flashes. For now, I think I will ditch the endo. She offered me no other options. Your PCP can also check your thyroid hormone levels. However, a different endo that you might see, possibly will have other options for you. Would not hurt to try, if only to check out thyroid issues.

Thanks for your helpful response. I will be making an appointment with an ENDO but not sure how long it will take to see one.
I don't have Hashimoto's but have been on thyroid medicine for about 20 years. The level gets checked every year and I've been in the correct range all that time.
My thought is to go to one appointment and then decide if I will continue.
I cannot take any of the osteo drugs due to reactions and/or issues with possible side effects that me and my PCP do not think I should expose myself to.
Again, thank you for sharing.

1 ReactionOsteoporosis is one of their specialties. They should have more info on the bone meds than any other doctor. I have seen two the first was terrible and I like the second one real well. Good luck.

1 ReactionOne of the things I was encouraged to do when trying to locate an endo was to specifically ask how many osteoporosis patients they have worked with. Also, ask them if they prescribe HRT. I have heard many do not and mine does not. My obgyn did a work up on me and agreed to start me on HRT then I went back to my endo to ask her if she would take over managing the HRT and she said she would not because she doesn’t prescribe them. She said it would definitely help me with bone metabolism, however, she did not have suggestions about what my target hormone level ranges should be for bone either.

3 ReactionsHi ! I am seeing an endocrinologist for the 1st time next week. I have my dexa scans ready to go with a list of questions , a list of conditions that may also be affecting my low T-score of -3.2 , and my family history of no outstanding adverse bone history. I have had no breaks, but my weight loss from 135 ( steady for years) to as low as 119, my rising blood pressure, bone pain , gastro issues, joint inflammation and Hashimotos with erratic TSH levels are all suggestive of an underlying issue/s. I am 68, active with walking, the gym and grandchildren. My oldest sister age 87 now was an avid hiker, she was put on Fosamax with negative side-effects, got off of it and is still out there hiking and going to the gym. Just be very prepared, take notes to help you have a concise conversation, latest bloodwork/scans and if you don't feel heard , seek another opinion until you do. Good luck !! Hope you will let us know how it went and I will do the same .

Hi Susan. How old are you ? Have you or any immediate family members had cancer ? For high risk patients such as those there is another option-Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators . I know little about it, but will be seeing an endo next week and will be a discussion topic. I hope to be very prepared with a list if time is of the essence which is so common at a physicians office these days. Best of luck to you in your journey to optimal health !
