Hair loss

My 73 year old wife was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia three years ago and has recently been loosing her hair. I'm starting to see her scalp through what has always been a thick crop of hair. She takes no medications for the disease because of allergic reactions and lack of finding anything that seemed to improve her condition. She sometimes cries for what seems like no reason, and I know she is sad and stressed about her condition. Has anyone had a similar experience with hair loss?

I've read that stress and nutritional issues, which can often go along with LBD, can sometimes cause hair thinning. It might be worth checking with her doctor about what's going on, maybe to rule out a simple vitamin deficiency or another easy fix.

Thanks for your helpful advice. She does have a doctor's visit next week and I'll be asking about it.

I'm sorry to hear about her hair loss. I can't imagine not taking medication for this disease. Unfortunately, her condition will not improve even with meds. I don't want to sound heartless but there's GOT to be something they can give her to at least make her comfortable and not so confused with everything she's experiencing on this journey. My husband also has LBD (diagnosed 4 years ago) and besides the "normal" alz dementia meds he also takes meds for depression and anxiety. Are you saying she's not taking anything at all? In the last 10 months my husband has been more distressed and uncomfortable with alot of things and now his dr's are trying different meds, more meds, eliminating meds, etc to get him more relaxed and comfortable and not so distressed.
I hope they can find an answer soon for her AND you.

Thanks for responding to my hair loss query.
I'd like to pick you brain further about medications.
My wife doesn't take any meds for her Lewy body because when she was first dianosed she was put on carbadopa-levadopa and Donepezil. She also had been taking a blood pressure med and a statin at the time. We tried the lewy meds for a month and she started breaking out with quarter size itching blisters all over her back and legs. She spent four days in the hospital and was taken off all medications. Once the blisters cleared she went back on Donepezil and exactly 30 days later the blisters returned. This made her extremely weary of taking anything. She was miserable.
But next we tried Rivastigmine. After taking it for a month the drug seemed to make her lethargic so doctor took her off of it. Since then she's off all Lewy meds but still takes BP and statin meds.
She sometimes seems sad but generally is a good natured person. We both are depressed about our situation but none of the drugs I was prescribed did anything but fog me up. I didn’t want to give her anything that would make her more distant. So thats where we're at three years into this journey. If you've found something that works for your husband please share. Ill bring it up on our next visit.
Good luck to you and your husband.
