Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

@ debbraw I'm grateful today that I didn't break my back again. I was just putting sheet under mattress lifted it up some and heard this loud pop felt it too boy did it put me down the pain was excrutiating. Went to E.R. had xray and Dr. said it was lumbosacral strain Praise the Lord it wasn't broken. Ice 3 x a day and turmeric tea so I'm down for a week in bed then start gradually exercising. But she said I could wash the dishes ,least of my likes!

@lioness - Oh wow. I am so sorry about your back - but glad it was not a fracture. I believe you were already under the weather. When it rains it pours. Hope you feel better soon.

@lioness Oh my goodness! How awful! So glad it’s not broken. Now I’m going to be afraid to make my bed! Is there anyone who can help you? Bring dinner, find some good books? I’m so sorry, @lioness

@lioness. Linda, I’m so sorry that you hurt your back, but glad it was not more serious than it is. Backs can be so tricky as we age.

Washing dishes is not an activity that I hate! I hate ironing though. When we were first married and I was working full time my husband got used to doing his ironing and now still does. I’m grateful for that, plus I am not sure that I could do a good job on a man’s shirt these days, it’s been so long! I also hate sewing.

I’m not into dishes either, that’s why I’m out of silverware. Guess the time is near that I have to bite the bullet and get it done.

Precisely why I don’t make my bed. Well, not very often, then when I do, it’s on my knees so I don’t have to bend over and wreck my back.

@lionessm- Oh no! I am so so sorry Linda. Resting really does help your back to heal.
