Globus sensation: Anyone else have a lump feeling in their throat?

Posted by Karen @fue, Apr 23, 2022

As far as I know I am not anxious about anything. I am retired. I don't have too much pain from my polyneuropathy at the moment. However, I do seem to suffer from a globus a lot of the time. Is this common with anyone else please?

My own experience with globus stemmed from laryngopharyngeal reflux, LPR. ENT Jamie Koufman has a lot of free advice on LPR on her web site. See if any of that advice can help you. The short version is diet and lifestyle changes. ENT Jonathan Aviv also has free advice scattered across SM; there is a FB group that offers recipes based on his program of whole food, low acid diet. I think the group is named acid watcher diet warriors. Koufman also advises low-acid food and alkaline water, but I think she is more flexible on eating some processed food.

It started back in 2017, a relentless feeling of someone physically strangling me/crushing my trachea. NOT an interior feeling like something IN my throat, but more exterior. It was 24/7 non stop. I have had a FULL work up to rule out acid reflux. I was first diagnosed with LPR, put on PPI that did nothing for 6 months. Only to find out by a gastrointerologist I have no reflux conditions. I feel like I have had every work up and test done under the sun. Other symptoms that were occurring alongside my globus gradually went away over a yrs time, but the globus remained. Then poof, mid 2019 it completely disappeared and remained "history" until April 2021 when it came back. I have been suffering with this thing since then. I am feeling rather hopeless, depressed and I have lost majority that I had gained in the yr it was gone. I have a hard time believing it's due to anxiety/all in my head since it had disappeared then reappeared without any stressors, in fact it reappeared when I was at a very happy moment in my life. If anyone else has experienced this and has found an answer or treatment please help me? Its debilitating my life. Turning 31 this June if age helps. I have tried to find specialist for my condition with 1 result found in New York, but I live in Midwest. If an ENT happens to read this plea for help, please help me. I'm at my wits end. Begging for help at this point.

I know a couple of years have past, so not sure you will see this. My 14 year old daughter began feeling the choking sensation in January of this year (2025). It stopped for 2 1/2 weeks and restarted and has not stopped since first week or so of February. She has an EOE diagnosis officially as of March of this year and we have the eating issues under control through diet. But the choking or globus sensation has not stopped and is debilitating. We saw an ENT, he was not helpful. She is on budensinide steroid and a PPI, they are not helping with the globus. She is on a severely restricted diet for almost 2 months now of eating just two foods to see if it is a food allergy. She had MRT testing to find foods causing inflamation. Is there anything new on your condition? I wish you well and hope you found a solution.
