Fusiform celiac artery dilatation: Anyone else had this?

Posted by tallbeachbum @tallbeachbum, Nov 8, 2021

I’m a 62 year old male in good shape. The VA is my primary care. My doctor has been running test on my heart . First was a nuclear stress test I passed ,second was a ultrasound on my heart that was good as well . The CT scan reviled a mildly dilated ascending thoracic aorta measuring 4.0 x 3.9 cm .
Also a fusiform aneurysmal dilatation of the celiac artery just beyond its origin measuring 1.8 x 1.5 cm . The VA notified me they are not equipped to handle my case so they are putting my case out in the medical community. Not much on the internet about this . Has anyone ever had this.

Hello @tallbeachbum and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I read, with interest, about your recent diagnosis of fusiform aneurysmal dilatation of the celiac artery, As I had not heard of this before I did a little research and found this on the National Institutes of Health website.
Here is the link to that article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5928028/, This definitely is a rare occurrence and according to this article can be caused by penetrating trauma.

If you care to share more, did you have trauma to this area at one time or the other? I'm thinking of things like a car accident or other types of trauma.

Did the VA offer any suggestions as to the type of doctor you should see? As this is a rare disorder, I would highly recommend a health care facility that is both research-oriented as well as one that uses a multi-disciplinary approach. A medical university or a facility like Mayo Clinic would surely be a good place to start.

Did your VA doctor suggest that you act on this right away?

October 28 2021 diagnosed with the Fusiform Dilation of the Celiac Artery measuring 1.8x1.5 cm with no-symptoms at all, found by CT scan.

Jan 29 2014 had cardiac ablation for Afib was found by a doctor visit for a regular check up, had no symptoms.Cardiac Surgeon went through both the right and left groining arteries. Surgery was successful with no Afib to date

2001 Double Hernia operation that was successfully with mesh liner

January 28 1987 was involved in a very bad car wreck where the car was traveling 60 mph and hit the guardrail on the passenger side back seat area where I was located. Broke my left Femur in half just below the Lesser Trochanter about 5 inches down.Brushed both Kidneys, Cracked my Pelvis Bone, Had 3 units of Plasma and was in the Hospital for 2 weeks and out of work 6 months.

Never smoked

Do have High Blood Pressure that is controlled by meds

The VA has not told me anything except they can not help me with this case. They said they were going to inform the Community Care Network and let them know about my case. I had a appointment with the VA Vascular Surgeon today Nov 9 2021 but the VA cancel the appointment yesterday Nov 8 2021 stating they can not help me with my case because they are not familiar with the diagnosis. I will have to contact the VA if I do not hear back from the CCN today. And contact the CCN on if I can choose my own doctor to help me. By what I’m reading the answer is yes.

I am not blaming the VA because of the rarity of my diagnosis but I do need information ASAP because of the severity if it ruptured.

I think the Mayo Clinic would be able to help me and will inform the VA when I get in touch with them .

It sounds like you are being proactive in this matter, @tallbeachbum and that is good. Keep persisting until you get a referral to an expert in this area.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you again. Will you post again when you have more information regarding a referral?

Were you given any instructions or lifestyle restrictions in order to minimize the risk while you wait?

I was diagnosed thru an MRA with a 2mm mild fusiform dilation or branch infundibolum 5 months ago. Just had my second MRA with no changes. I am not sure what I should be doing or not doing besides watching my blood pressure ? Any advice would be helpful. I am very active at 60 and had played hockey for a long time. My Doctor isn't sure if this has always been there or grew over time.

Hello Just had a CT scan of my abdomen oct 2023 and found dilated celiac after 1.8cm, fusiform. old ct from 2013 mildly dilated too in retrospect but only 1.5cm. I am asymptomatic now, had cholecystitis/mild gallstone pancreatitis in 2013 awaiting referral to vascular surgeon. please update me on your experience with this issue, not sure what to do-watch it or have treatment, not sure if can be handled at the community hospital as is rare.

Thanks

Hi, @mjpisa, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'd like to invite @quinnerton and @tallbeachbum back to this discussion on fusiform celiac artery dilation to see if they can share how they are doing and the route of treatment they opted for.

@mjpisa, while you are waiting for your vascular surgeon referral, have you been provided with any sort of guidance on how you should temporarily proceed or any big concerns in the short-term?

REPLY

Thank you, no short term concerns.
