Functional abdominal pain in children
My child suffers from functional abdominal pain and I don’t know what to do. He is 12 years old and is in horrible pain everyday to the point he can’t walk some days. He misses a lot of school and I can’t get any doctor or specialist to back me with notes or anything, even something saying he has a medical condition that affects his quality of life. It’s very life altering and I can’t get any doctor to run tests and this has been going on for almost 2 years now. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi @italiansweetie1016, I am so sorry to hear about your son and his severe abdominal pain. You'll see that I added your post to the About Kids & Teens as well as the digestive health group. There is some good information regarding functional abdominal pain in scholarly articles like these two: "What causes functional abdominal pain in children? Researchers do not know for sure what causes functional abdominal pain. It can stem from a variety of conditions, such as a food allergy, infection, or condition like Crohn's disease that requires long-term care and monitoring. In most cases, functional abdominal pain is not caused by a serious medical condition."

What hospitals/specialty clinics have you had him evaluated in? Have you considered trying Mayo Clinic in Rochester where they treat adolescents?

I’m old, but I remember having bad stomach aches as a kid- you just want to curl up and scream.
I have a question- who diagnosed him with functional abdominal pain and how was that diagnosis confirmed?
There must have been tests performed- or should have.
Was your son ever tested for celiac disease?
It might be a good idea to consider Amanda’s suggestion- to contact Mayo Clinic.
He did a scope ran his stomach looked great no acid, irritation, it looked great. They diagnosed him with Gerd. Then he seen another pediatric gastroenterologist and she was a quack and she’s the one who diagnosed him with Functional Abdominal Pain and told him to meditate and do breathing exercises for the pain and also recommended that he take IBS medication otc and he took it for almost a month and didn’t help him at all. They put him on Prilosec in the beginning he took it for almost a year and it didn’t help and he didn’t want to take it anymore so he’s been off of it for a while. The doctors want him to keep taking it when it doesn’t help and he’s been suffering since.
