Functional abdominal pain in my child. Any advice?
My child suffers from functional abdominal pain and I don’t know what to do. He is 12 years old and is in horrible pain everyday to the point he can’t walk some days. He misses a lot of school and I can’t get any doctor or specialist to back me with notes or anything, even something saying he has a medical condition that affects his quality of life. It’s very life altering and I can’t get any doctor to run tests and this has been going on for almost 2 years now. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi @italiansweetie1016, I am so sorry to hear about your son and his severe abdominal pain. You'll see that I added your post to the About Kids & Teens as well as the digestive health group. There is some good information regarding functional abdominal pain in scholarly articles like these two: "What causes functional abdominal pain in children? Researchers do not know for sure what causes functional abdominal pain. It can stem from a variety of conditions, such as a food allergy, infection, or condition like Crohn's disease that requires long-term care and monitoring. In most cases, functional abdominal pain is not caused by a serious medical condition."

What hospitals/specialty clinics have you had him evaluated in? Have you considered trying Mayo Clinic in Rochester where they treat adolescents?

I’m old, but I remember having bad stomach aches as a kid- you just want to curl up and scream.
I have a question- who diagnosed him with functional abdominal pain and how was that diagnosis confirmed?
There must have been tests performed- or should have.
Was your son ever tested for celiac disease?
It might be a good idea to consider Amanda’s suggestion- to contact Mayo Clinic.

2 ReactionsHe did a scope ran his stomach looked great no acid, irritation, it looked great. They diagnosed him with Gerd. Then he seen another pediatric gastroenterologist and she was a quack and she’s the one who diagnosed him with Functional Abdominal Pain and told him to meditate and do breathing exercises for the pain and also recommended that he take IBS medication otc and he took it for almost a month and didn’t help him at all. They put him on Prilosec in the beginning he took it for almost a year and it didn’t help and he didn’t want to take it anymore so he’s been off of it for a while. The doctors want him to keep taking it when it doesn’t help and he’s been suffering since.
Hello! I am sorry he’s going through this pain. I developed 24/7 abdominal pain after food poisoning. It’s been 4 years and I’m debilitating pain and GI issues. Have you found any treatments that work? What’s the pain like? Is it 24/7?

Has he .. or you .. kept a diary or journal of what he eats or drinks that make his symptoms worse? For instance .. cold or hot foods and drink. Spicy foods or specific foods as milk and dairy, wheat, soy? Have you had an allergist do testing for food allergies or intolerance?
I am not allergic to milk .. I am intolerant to its protein no matter if it is cow, soy, rice, or almond milk. It is painful if I ingest them. If mixed and cooked … like with cake I do okay. Instant pudding I hurt. .. but cooked pudding okay.
I know your son needs a good pediatric gastroenterologist to sort it out. Who that is probably depends on where you are at. A network like Mayo Clinic or other teaching hospital are going to be your best choices to find one.
Best wishes,

2 Reactions@fourof5zs we have done a lot of those things except for the allergy test, they just keep trying different medicines and he has had every test done . If they don’t figure it out soon. Then he may be going to a Mayo Clinic soon enough because 6 Years of him laying around and having no quality of life is long enough for him to suffer, he had to take a medical leave from school and he’s 16 years old. It’s about time we get this figured out.
