Low-grade fevers weeks after COVID: Is this common with long COVID?

Posted by pdd @pdd, Feb 28, 2022

I was hospitalized for COVID and home since 2/3. On 2/24 started to have low grade fevers in the evening. Tylenol takes care of the fever. I am on home oxygen still but improving. Mobility and strength is better. Important to note immunosuppression due to cancer therapy a year ago. Lymphocytes are still depleted. Is this common with long COVID?

Have fevers most nights about 100. Still can't figure out the sleeping. Taking xanax .5 mg to help. When I go without sleep I get sick again. Not covid but its symtpoms. Have now started to cough more than I have yet.

Hi @pdd, I'm glad to hear that your mobility and strength continue to improve. Fevers as you like know are a symptom of both lymphocytopenia (low lymphocytes) and viral infection. It sounds like your body is working on recovery. How are you doing now?

@sonyamagee1964, sleep is so important to recovery and good health. Dr. Van offer some tips in this blog post https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/post-covid-recovery/newsfeed-post/the-low-hanging-fruit/
You might find other tips in the Sleep Health group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/sleep-health/
Besides Xanx, have you found some things that help you get better sleep?

@edbigd, are you still experiencing nightly fevers?

I am still having some low grade fevers mostly in the evening. My nurse brain kicked in and I also thought about atelectasis from the Covid pneumonia and relatively low activity levels. My HR is high driving up oxygen demand and my last Hgb was 9.4. Difficulty weaning off oxygen. I started using the Incentive spirometer again and am back up to a normal capacity. So, still improving albeit slowly.

I have struggled with low grade fevers too. I also have lupus and am on immunosuppressants, so I'm not sure what causes what anymore. I started taking Tylenol twice a day, every day (per my doctor's advice). That has helped a lot. But it might not be the thing for everyone.

Thanks for sharing— I’ve been having low grade fevers and night sweats with little appetite. I’m going to meet in four days with my doctor and ask for new blood work. Thanks for mentioning this.

I still have a fever every night but no fever in the morning. Since my February 28 post nightly fever has come down from 100.5+ to around 100.0.
Need to see my PCP again to recheck my blood panels.
Recent development has been tinnitus.

I tested positive for Covid July 18, probably had it a few days before that.
I’m much better, but still not 100%. I have lingering fatigue/ gi issues, etc. plus a low grade fever in the afternoons of around 99.6. In the mornings temp is close to normal, then goes up as the day goes on. When I first got sick temp was over 101, so this is an improvement.
I’ve gone back to my normal activities, though am taking it slower. Am I expecting too much too soon? Anyone else have persistent low grade fever?

Have you retested? I haven’t yet.
Maybe the infection isn’t totally cleared from our bodies?
So far I haven’t fallen asleep on my feet, but I can relate to the feeling. I feel like such a zombie sometimes.
