Fallen 3x this Month
Could my falling be Lupron related?
I had my 6 month Lupron shot in May 2026 and SBRT in June 2026. No side effects on either
All of a sudden, I am falling. Never happened before.
In the past few weeks, I have fallen 3 times, one a horrid face plant which has left me with 2 black eyes and purple bruising all over my face.
I am ready for Halloween!
I am not on any medication except for Levothryoxine (thyroid) which I have been on since age 35 (75 yo now).
Baseline bone scan okay
Blood pressure excellent, all recent labs good etc. I hike 2-3 miles almost every day, have for 15 years, and am hiking currently.
Could 4 months into my Lupron be causing my balance issues?
I am lifting weights, but only weekly. I figure all my yard work is building some muscle too
I welcome any advice and/or opinions
Thanks

have you had dizzy spells ? Lupron like most of the ADT drugs inhibits testostrone. that in itself can cause you to become less stable and while falls and dizzyness are not listed as side effects from Lupron ( or other ADT drugs) I believe these drugs make us more vulnerable to missteps.
My advice is to log every day with just brief summary of events and if you are still falling by yr end, then time for assesment with your doc. My exp with doctors and PC is they really are not too interested in your day to day struggles unless there is a direct correlation to PC. I know I have to be more vigilant in my activities and finally had to realize I dont need to be on my roof doingrepairs or climbing down cliffs to some swimming hole. I still bike every day...but am much more cautious than in my youth...I hate to lose my surfing agility and such ..maybe after my ADT I can recapture some..getting old is insulting in many ways.

3 ReactionsI was on Lupron + abiraterone for two years. During that time (and ever since), I do resistance training with dumbells, aerobics (in addition to the hiking, biking, etc) and balance exercises at least 3 days a week. In total, it takes an hour and continues to make a huge difference in terms of strength, energy and stability.
When newly diagnosed, I participated in a clinical trial that focused on the physiological impacts of lupron on exercise at the cellular level (measuring depletion rates of ATP during exercise prior to and at intervals over the first six months of treatment). Even with regular exercise, there was a decline in strength, endurance, reflexes and balance.
There are excellent online videos/reels on balance exercises by licensed physical therapists that have proved very helpful in noticeably improving/maintaining my balance. I encourage you to incorporate some of these into your daily routine. As kids, we incorporated balance practice into our every day play and activities. I have found doing the same now makes a big difference.

7 ReactionsYou will find that your balance is not as good when you are on Lupron. Doing balance exercises can be very important if somebody is falling repeatedly. My son, who was a personal trainer, keeps telling me I need to do more balance exercises.
I find it can be easy to fall, but one has to be somewhat cautious. I have fallen a few times, but watching where I’m going and what impediments are in front of me can, and has, prevented me from having more falls. It has been quite a while since my last one since I am more careful.
If you are falling while on Lupron , you should definitely look at bone strengtheners because your bones get weak. You should get a DEXA scan first to see how strong your bones are, That can decide whether or not you really need to get bone strengtheners.
Speak to your doctor about this and make sure you’ve had a DEXA scan. If you’re going to fall, you want to make sure your bones are strong enough to not break.

4 ReactionsLupron is known to cause balance issues. You may be able to switch to a different ADT. Maybe call you doctor and let them know. Staying hydrated might help. Balance exercises are often a good move anyway. I'd check out Orgovyx. Sometimes the side effects go away after you've been on a medication a while. But the falls aren't worth the risk.

4 ReactionsI am so sorry to hear that, it must be very scary and very painful too 😢. Other members already covered Lupron and balance, but please go to regular doctor and ask for referral for neurological evaluation since mini strokes can cause unexpected falls too. Perhaps check your peripheral vision too.
It can be just bad luck also and talking from experience here lol. Couple of years back (I was late fifties) I fell twice in a span of 2 mos and had really bad injuries, inclooding a broken rib. I have excellent balance and am very fit and agile but I made ditzy decisions 😵💫 - like walking fast backward without checking distance to the pool edge ( accident no 1) and rushing like crazy person through dark garage and tripping and spilling flat forward over electrical cable (accident no 2).
Wishing you very fast healing and zero falls in the future 🍀
It's unlikely this is the case for you, but when I had trouble balancing in 2021, it turned out that there was a rapidly-growing lesion (metastasis) in my middle spine, crushing the nerves in my spinal cord.
If it keeps getting worse — and especially if your toes or behind start to get numb — go DIRECTLY to the hospital emergency room (ideally one big enough to have a good orthopedic and/or neurology department). Don't wait for a doctor's appointment the next day. My emergency surgery happened with only hours to spare.

3 Reactions@xahnegrey40 No dizziness
@dailyeffort very interesting about the clinical trial
@jeffmarc Thank you. Although my raccoon eyes are scary to my wife (!), I worry more about breaking a bone. We are active together so it would impact the quality of our married life.
I am hoping not to go on bone strengtheners as I have all my teeth, they are healthy, and I worry about the side effects. Do you know if you can stop the strengthener once the build has been rebuilt, when off of Lupron?
I will start my balance exercises - no excuses (although I have many....)
Thank you, as always,, for your generous replies
@surftohealth88 Thanks for the sound advice. Wife wanted me to go to Urgent Care, but I knew I was fine (even if I looked scary!).
Thankfully, we don't have a pool....
