Exercise with a pacemaker?

Posted by mauricepower @mauricepower, Jan 8 12:12pm

I had my pacemaker implanted September 13th, 2025. I’m searching for exercises that I can safely do. I’m wondering if I can do push-ups (some people say press-ups) again. I’m still trying to decide which upper body exercises to do.

What my pace clinic did a Mayo was to have me do various arm exercises to see if there was any interference or affect on my wires and ICD/Pacemaker.

We did find on particular exercise did in fact cause noise on one lead which device would see as AFIB. So I try to refrain form that exercise and/or movement.

@jc76 Thank you. What you did has never been suggested and sounds like an excellent idea. I will bring this up to my cardiac team. Appreciate your reply.

@lcr35 After surgery, I went to a cardio rehab "gym" for a short while. As a suggestion, that may be a way to find out exactly what is safe for you. Do ask your medical team if this is a feasible option!

@walkinggirl Thanks, Linda. I have what is considred a top notch cardic group so it's disappointing they don't have protocol after the surgery to do what you're mentioning. Appreciate your reply.

@lcr35 In my experience, I found that many medical personnel are so focused on their specialty that they often have trouble looking/thinking outside of their specialty box. My primary care person seems to see a bigger picture. For example, I had a cardiologist appointment, and things seemed to be going fine, so he asked if anything else was going on. I talked about a small stress fracture in my left foot, a visit to a podiatrist, 3 months later (earliest appointment available), it was improving but gee, I waited 3 months to have the appointment - given a boot, wore it for less than 2 days because right leg started hurting - off balance - follow up visit "These things tend to heal themselves" - I should have cancelled the appointment. Now I am dealing with PT and an upcoming ortho appointment. As I answered questions about the pain, it did not seem like a blood clot and he lost interest. My primary care doctor suggested PT and PT suggested ortho in addition.

Sorry to hear you're going through that. The adage of the patient being their most important advocate still holds true. Best wishs.
