Down in the dumps again – challenges with adult children

Posted by kdo0827 @kdo0827, Dec 27, 2018

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. I started taking Cymbalta and got off the other stuff. I was doing better but the past 2 months or so not so good. I’m struggling with feeling invisible and I’m feeling very unappreciated. I feel my kids only call when they want something or have a problem. They never ask how I’m feeling nor do they try and help. I had a procedure done yesterday and neither one bothered to check on me. Adding this to my depression isn’t good. Do any of you have these same feelings about your kids? What should I do?

Yes 1-23. They gave me some medication to ease some of the issues but it causes all kinds of side effects I’m not sure I want to try.

@kdo0827 the drug companies are required to list side effects even if only 1 person has ever experienced them. The benefits are so much greater than the size effects! When I got sick last year with a brain inflammation, I was put on SO many drugs, but I never really had side effects. With the heavy steroids I was taking, I never even gained weight! I’m so much better now and still taking my pills. Take your medication and let them work for you. As a nurse, I know medications and the unknown can be scary, but where would we be without them! Take care of yourself and get to feeling better. We care

I do understand your feelings of sometimes not wanting to wake up in the morning. What you have to do is look in the mirror, talk it out and then you tell yourself I matter. I make a difference. People love, care and depend on me. For me I say “Satan you are NOT going to control me and I’m not going to believe your lies! Not today Satan, not today!! I grab my journal and I make myself come up with 5 things I’m grateful for. Some days the list is full of great things and some days I can only come up with things like coffee, my chair, etc. We are all here to reach out to and I’m here anytime you want to chat!

@kdo0827 For some of us side effects can be difficult. I have a very difficult time with medications so can empathize with you. We are not all wired the same. So sorry you are having this difficulty.

Hello @becsbuddy

I so appreciate your comment to @kdo0827. You are right about the side effects listed for each med, they certainly do not apply to everyone and sometimes very infrequently. Trying a med that a doctor prescribes is always a good idea, especially if you have had long standing problems and diagnoses that require medications.

I realize that sometimes when a person has anxiety, that anxiety carries over to include medical treatment, including the taking of meds. It takes a lot of courage for an anxious person to embrace new meds or medical treatments, but it usually is a good thing once you get started.

Thanks for your encouraging words as well as thoughtful comments. As a nurse, you speak from both personal experience as well as medical knowledge!

Yes you’re right about listing every side effect. I, too have worked in the medical field for a long time. This medication mentions depression, fatigue, hallucinations and several other things that I’m susseptical to. I babysit my grandson during the week so I’m very Leary of trying this. I will try it on the upcoming 3 day weekend and see how it goes. Thanks for caring 🤗

Having Anxiety and being placed on a new medication can be uncomfortable. Recently I was prescribed a medication for high BP. With the help of others here I was able to take this medication. I was not invalidated for what I was experiencing and my BP is down some. Too many times I have been invalidated by doctors and hesitant to speak up. They see anxiety and invalidate. Grrrrr. Again, yeah team!! No, I was not a cheerleader but had a younger sister who was...to this day she can not speak below Mach 5. On the lighter side from one with anxiety.

Can you tell mr med? I was put on one that is called Remeron but I seem to be having too many side-effects - nightmares, severe headaches, feeling like I have the flu.
