Do taking Statins cause shortness of breath?
I have begun to do research on this topic as I began taking statins for high cholesterol years ago. I have shortness of breath which began after the doctor out me in statins.
A few studies medical studies I have read pointed to the weakening of middle body muscles weakening possibly caused by statin intake. Would like to hear feedback on this.

Thank you for your answer. I really appreciate it, and I will pursue a statin change from my doctor.
Statins are not likely to cause shortness of breath.
Check with your doctor to seek other causes.
The may do a check up and chest X-ray.
@seniormed
I have had other tests done with no significant cause. My PCP suggested injectable statins.
I also took statins for years and when they upped my dosage all my troubles started. Headaches, muscle pain and weakness and shortness of breath. Most have gotten better except the shortness. My cardiologist said it was statin caused and I need to build it up again with excercise.

3 ReactionsThank you. Very interesting. Have you found any exercises that help? I appreciate a response as I am willing to exercise to strengthen.
I have been to 2 GI specialists and have read various medical studies which claim statins do affect muscles and the dosage or type of statin could be examined and possibly be changed or lowered.
From what I have read on this site and what I have done, just keeping active helps, along with stretching and light weight routine.
Statins do cause muscle pain and discomfort AND does cause breathing issues
Thanks for reply...
When did the shortness of breath begin? If it was recently, it is probably good to get checked out. Shortness of breath in someone taking statins is obviously not something to be ignored. I'm guessing you're saying it has been ongoing for a long time . . .
