Buttock/tailbone pain, sitting or lying down - symptom of PMR?

Posted by pacarolyn @pacarolyn, Oct 4, 2021

Has anyone experienced buttock/tailbone pain when seated or lying down as a symptom of PMR? Also, has anyone had labs showing elevated LDL-Cholesteral or anemia that wasn't diagnosed prior to PMR onset?

Yes, and yes !!! Butt pain, noticeably when sitting in the car, even though my Subaru has normally very comfortable seats. Though it's finally gone away recently, a twenty minute drive used to feel like ten hours. No sitting position on the couch was comfortable, now that has gone away, but lying on my back in bed is still uncomfortable though all other symptoms are gone and all blood markers are normal. And yes, I'm boarder line anemic. Tried 65 mg. iron tablets but after a week they bothered my stomach. I'll talk to my GP in two weeks about iron deficiency anemia. No cholesterol problems. Glad you mentioned this, thought I was a lone weirdo, and even my rheumatologist though my butt pain was an unrelated back problem.

yes but i thought it was a separate entity since my crp and sed rate were normal..physical therapy alleviated the symptoms..however i would not minimize your pain which could be related to pmr and would suggest blood work to confirm

Hi @pacarolyn, You will notice we modified the title of your discussion to better describe the question you are asking and to hopefully allow more members with experience to join the conversation. My PMR is in remission. I have always had discomfort when sitting for too long. I wouldn't really call it pain but a little more like an ache. I have had elevated LDL numbers but the doctor or rheumatologist never mentioned it being related to PMR. You may be interested in an older discussion on Connect that talks about the pain.

Have you discussed it with your rheumatologist or doctor to see what they think?

Thank you. I actually went to my orthopedist thinking it might be related. Had an MRI and nothing found. Later read an article that listed buttock pain as a PMR symptom. Just wondered if others have this problem. Not sure what to do from here except stand up more often and move around.

I think you may be right 🙃 Keep moving is my PMR motto...just not too fast or hard.

I had this problem along with the "frozen" shoulder before I was diagnosed and started taking Prednisone. I am trying to get off of said drug after two and a half years and the "pain in the butt" has returned with lots of other muscular tightness and spasms so It looks as though I won't be stopping Prednisone after all.

Yes, me too. I am a year and a half in, I tapered to 0 a couple of months ago but immediately had a bad flare up and had to go back to 5mg. I have gotten down to 5,4,3 mg. and definitely have the butt ache. My blood tests also show anemia. Does anyone really get off of Prednisone and go into remission? I have read about so many people who can't get off and continue for 12 years and more. I wonder, what is the percentage of people that go into remission at some point? I am very active and find that exercising and moving as much as you can tolerate really helps.

Yes PMR related, this is something that bothers me, and in the evening is worse. Mine went away when my PMR was gone. I have had a longer about with it this time and it is back.

Quilterdar, I am curious You said your PMR was gone, how long did it take to go into remission? And it came back? I’d love to hear from others that there really is hope that it will go into remission.
