CPAP (Phillips recall) and Cancer

Posted by John R A @johnra, Jun 17, 2021

I have recently learned that the manufacturer of the Dreamweaver CPAP (Phillips) is recalling these machines. They have evidence that the machines are emitting gasses and particles that may cause cancer. I have been using one of these machines for almost five years, and just over a year ago I was diagnosed with CEL. I would be interested to hear if other CEL patients (or other leukemias) are CPAP users?

Hi John, do you have to contact an attorney in your state for this type of suit? I'm in California, I see that Levin Law is Florida.

Hello, my husband has been using a cpap machine for more than 20 years with his most recent machine one of the Philips recalled models. He also has RA and has been sick for the last 5 years with various symptoms; extreme fatigue, extreme dizziness, difficulty breathing, cough, weakness, bowel problem and loss of weight (only 135 lbs now). No one has been able to help. We have been trying to get a replacement machine since January unsuccessfully. We finally have an appointment in 2 weeks with a pulmonologist/sleep apnea specialist. Can anyone suggest questions we should ask during our appointment?

Hello @serichardson, Welcome to Connect. I wasn't able to get a replacement for my recalled CPAP either so I went out and purchased another brand and started using it. I know it must also be difficult for you trying to help your husband through his various other symptoms. I'm glad to hear you finally have an appointment setup with a sleep apnea specialist and a pulmonologist. I think a good start maybe to just list your husband current symptoms and discuss treatment options when you have your appointment. There is a website that has some cards you can print out so that you can plan your conversation with the doctor that I think you might find helpful. It provides some suggested thoughts on questions - https://patientrevolution.org/visit-tools.

Is your husband still using the recalled CPAP?

John, thanks for your response! He is currently still using his machine because he stops breathing and gasps for breath if he doesn’t. I will visit the site you sent.

Hi John,
I found your thread thru a kind person on "healthunlocked" in a specific "community" there. My husband was diagnosed with "CLL" last year. We just found out that his first cpap 2012-2014 was in the philips recall. So, I registered on the phillips site (even though he has a new machine) I wanted it documented. It's really good to know there is another community out there for resources. Thank you for making this thread. I guess our next step is filing with an attorney. I am going to read this thread thru and see what you suggested. Hope you are well & all who are also here as well. This is scarey to know. We have great doctors and are staying positive but to think something "caused this" is a yucky feeling for lack of a better word for now. Thanks again!

I have been using a Phillips cpap for at least 9 years. It is a REMstar PRO which showed was not a part of the recall, but the serial numbers for it shows that it is on recall list. I have not had any respiratory difficulties. What concerns me is the dampener being a carcinogen. Any information on the possibility of developing cancer. What to be alert of. If should have any diagnostic tests performed? Beg forgiveness if have posted in incorrect location. Thank You
