Continued Post-Nasal Drip and Constant Mucus in Throat

Posted by adominic @adominic, Mar 22, 2022

I was sick the last week or January/first week of February. Home Test-negative, rapid PCR-negative. All COVID symptoms and known prolonged exposure to infected individuals make me believe it was COVID. Since then, I have had a tremendously hard time dealing with post-nasal drip and mucus collecting in my throat. It is clear, sticky and almost impossible to remove from throat by coughing or clearing my throat. Flonase does nothing, allergy pills do nothing. Had anyone else had an issue like this post COVID? How long did it last? What did you do to cope? Small problem in comparison to others that post here, I realize.

I’ve had the same problem with the nasal drip and phlegm since getting the COVID in January of 2021. I got a prescription for Ipratropium Bromide nasal spray and it helps control it but doesn’t get rid of it

Yes! The one thing in your post that piqued my interest is when you wrote "...almost impossible to remove from throat...". I have had the same issue for almost three years now after my infection with the Alpha variant. After seeing multiple specialists and having multiple tests done (x-ray, pulmonary function test, and laryngoscopy - to look into throat and beginning of airway) - all of which were normal - my doctors and I have come to the conclusion that inflammation is what is causing my issues (thick feeling throat, tiny bits of thick phlegm - sometimes blood streaked, thick mucus, stuffy nose, pressure in ears, tinnitus, the constant feeling of needing to clear throat, and difficulty getting air into and out of lungs - no lowering of O2 has ever been an issue). Possibly inflammation of the mucosal membranes. Coughing has never been an issue for me. I do use Flonase to decrease inflammation in sinuses when I can't stop sneezing or when the stuffiness won't go away. I also use Pepcid and Zyrtec (H1 and H2 antihistamines) to bring down inflammation throughout my body. I think these two medicines have helped my breathing, but it's still not normal.

Me too. I had Covid in October 21 and was hospitalized. I had pnuemonia and on 02. Since then I have had nasal drip, phlegm in my throat. I do have seasonal allergies so thought that was causing all the nasal drip and phlegm. I took Loratadine and am still taking it. This allergy medicine can only be taken every 24 hours. It still is not working after all this time. It is very annoying to have this problem. My friends are constantly asking me if I have a cold. Thank you everyone for the ideas written here. My PCP isn't interested in anything related to Long Covid so I have been trying to find out information to help.

If I had the resources I'd promote research into engineered virus creating long term irritation and inflammation resulting in polyps which then create more phlegm and irritation in a cycle. Limiting dairy, salt and rice and drinking clear herbal teas such as dandelion root helps to clear it.

Yes, I've had that same set of symptoms you describe. Agree that little helps, maybe Mucinex on particularly bad days. For me it comes and goes.

I’m stunned. Seriously.
I didn’t think I could get anything out of a chat. What an idiot I can be!
Since I got Covid in 3/20 I have had problems swallowing, issues w/ post nasal, etc and I have been tested —just as you said!! and all normal, always!! Ergo, “nothing is wrong with you, you are ‘just’ struggling with ____ “. [Now fill in the blank with: seasonal allergy/ seasonal changes/ normal aging/ hormonal fluctuations/ something’s going around/ gerd/ everyone has that but they don’t bring it up/ medication side effects that conveniently & suddenly popped up right then and haven’t gone away….]

I’ll try Pepcid/Zyrtec. Tried everything else ad nauseum.
And after I tried it all I’ve been told…

well, you ALL know what I’ve been told!!

Funny I should read this right now. I honestly thought I might choke tonight. Couldn't breathe or get water down my throat. Only thing that relaxed me was my Dulera inhaler. Scary!!! I had Covid the first year it began. Never connected the 2. Really think it could be COPD related.

Drink lots of water, try to cough it up. I bend over to help the mucous go into my mouth. Good luck!

Most of the mucus from my post nasal drips goes down to my wind pipe forcing me the need to cough it up. Only a very small amount goes into my throat. I am really suffering from the continuous coughing and nose blowing. Yet all types of nasal sprays have not worked. Allergy tests are all negative and CT scan of my nasal passage shows nothing.
Any suggestions?

hello friends...
I wrote time ago, writing that sugar makes symptoms worse... even others here reported this.
But even removing chocolates, icecreams etc.... I still had pnd.
A friend of mine, suggested me to try a diet poor in carbohydrates, because from the breakfast, I used to eat cereales, that are 80% carbohydrates....so the diet is some weeks without cereales, pasta, bread, pizza, fruits...
search the web for low carbohydrates diet...
I should eat things that have very low carbohydrates and high in proteins and fats.
I tried it a bit, and feel much better regarding the pnd.
Can you tell me if you are eating cereales, pasta, bread, pizza, fruit?
Or, is someone of us who doesn t these food and still have pnd?
