Considering no meds and trying diet, exercise and supplements

Posted by osteocurious @osteocurious, Nov 20, 2025

Hello. I have read soooooo much about both. Meds vs naturally increasing bone mass density. Please if anyone has successfully bypassed the med route - what did you do? How long did it take? Are you pleased with your increase? I am strongly considering no meds as I am on a cocktail already for epilepsy - which decreases bone density! I dont need more despair from possible brittle bones from meds. Thank you for any hope.

Hi @lilac2025,

Your question is so serendipitous - I just received my CTX and P1NP scores one year post-Reclast and after previous years (1) of Evenity and (9-1/2 months) of Tymlos and my scores indicate that my bones have again begun their descent into resorption mode. I asked my current doc to quantify the increase . . . couldn't pin him down. He did say, however, that what he sees in the numbers does not require any urgent intervention. I have a DEXA in January, 2026, and we'll wait until the dust settles and see how "bad" things have gotten. He, again, told me Prolia could be my saving grace. 🙁

No doc has ever tried to determine why I have OP, and none has really taken into consideration my personal medical history enough to say "Oh, that penicillin you had massive doses of as a little girl may have caused this . . . or you drank too much coffee . . ." My first doc pretty much just said, "What does it matter - you have OP". Unfortunately, I've always been a "why" person, but I had to settle for that; guess I'll never know.

With this new, and disheartening, bloodwork I too have decided to perhaps go the more natural route - my diet and supplements are already under control, so I figure what I need is exercise. No doc has really given me any info on that subject either - "Walking is a great weight-bearing exercise". While that may be true, do I need to walk 1, 10, or 100 miles per day to avail myself of that benefit? Additionally, I feel that strength training for my core and limbs will keep me more upright as my spine starts to settle and will give my muscles a chance to keep my puny little bones from taking the brunt of gravity that age seems to wish upon us.

Didn't mean to sound so doom and gloom. 'Nuff said. If anyone has any thoughts on strength training, walking, etc, feel free to jot a line and put it on the wire. Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Cheers!

Has anyone tried Osteofrax? https://healthybonesco.com/products/osteofrax

I read what it says about the “key research”. It isnt on OsteoFrax itself but research on the ingredients. So no real third party testing on the supplement itself. That is not adequate testing.

@maggieb246 Here are a couple links from Google Scholar to studies, the first is of cissus quadrengularis. It was a review of published research, and their take was the total samples were 354 people, and most of the studies has indication of bias:
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s12906-025-04995-8
The second was a review of 50 years of studies of dalbergia sissoo (common names sheesham or Indian Rosewood). A handful of those studies explored the osteogenic (bone enhancing) properties, and only one of these, involved humans (30women for 12 months)
https://academic.oup.com/jpp/article/75/4/482/7057817
Here is a link to that study where women were given 300 MG of the herb twice a day for 12 months, along with daily calcium and vitamin D. There was no control group:
https://journals.lww.com/jomh/fulltext/2019/10010/a_clinical_study_of_a_standardized_extract_of.8.aspx
Given the extremely small samples, the sparsely of carefully constucted studies, and the huge price of the supplement, I personally would pass.

We also do not know the potential side effects of these unregulated supplements. Keep in mind that Osteoporosis medications are subject to 3 phases of regulated testing and documentation of all side effects. Products like Osteofrax have not been subjected to any of this.

What is your hesitation to trying drugs from your doctor?

Two years ago I opted, as you did, to try more exercise and a better diet. Last December I awoke and could not walk because of insufficiency fractures of my sacrum. Please do not wind up like I have , a year later I'm on Evenity injections and still unable to walk much over a mile without a cane. Before last December I was doing weight exercises, 45 minutes 5 days a week on a rowing machine, and 30 minutes every day with a weighted hula hoop. Now I am having hip and thigh pain and have just had x-rays to try and rule out femur fractures. There is no good answer, find a GOOD doctor and hopefully get some help.

I am sorry you have had such a hard experience. I am leaning towards getting more medical advice. Mom just passed after two vertebral compression fractures - she also had OP. What a complex yet minimally understood and supported condition.

Hi, I have been dancing around Osteofrax - not sure of what it is and trying to find supplements that work. I am now testing my vitamins in white wine vinegar heating to 180 degrees to try to imitate my stomach and trying to find out if my body a. assimilates it into my body, or b. do I pee it all out and there is no effect on my body as I cannot assimilate. More will be revealed as I need to buy vinegar tomorrow as I do have white only red and it is not effective. Osteofrax gives no information or reviews there are 4 star, 3 star and 1 star reviews but none are revealed. He the "BoneCoach" is having a free seminar tomorrow. I am trying to find a good Calcium Vitamin and B12 vitamin. More to come. Marie Torrisi
