calcium: good for bones, bad for heart ?

Posted by ashok69 @ashok69, Nov 4, 2021

I'm 52, in generally good health. However I have increased cardiac calcium score, diagnosed after coronary tomography angiogram (CTA). Recently I did some check up labs and found that I have a reduced testosterone blood level. Since I do not have any symptoms of reduced testosterone, I understand that hormone replacement therapy is not called for in my case. I do however worry about long term effect of low testosterone on bone metabolism. Now, my question is this: if I take calcium suplements to prevent premature bone demineralisation, could this worsen my cardiac calcium scoring?

Hi @ashok69 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I think it is critically important that you consult a physician about taking supplements for low testosterone and bone metabolism when you aren't currently low on calcium, but it is great that you are following up and doing research early on to try and get a handle on it.

What did your doctor suggest to counter the effects?

Thanks for your taking your time to read mypost @amandaburnett , and for your comments. The article you suggested is interesting, but I wasn't writing about calcium in the heart muscle cells, but rather calcium deposits in the coronary vessels, much like fat deposits blocking the passage of blood.

@ashok69 Hi I hear what your saying My Dr put me on calcium 1200 for my Osteo. When I saw my cardiologist previously I had a angiography The Dr told me it showed calcium in my one coronary vessel and they where clear before .So for me I would say yes as I never had calcium in my heart vessel before .So I cut my calcium to just one for my bones and increased other foods

Don’t forget vitamin K. Here is more information from the National Institute of Health.
