Bronchoscopy ILD

Posted by btrolley @btrolley, Aug 22, 2025

I had written my first post about a week ago and didn’t see any replies yet. I am suppose to have the bronchoscopy a week from today and was just hoping to have some input. Thank you!

I had one last month. I woke up coughing because my lungs had been flushed. I think that caused my sore throat and what felt like mild bruising. I put a can of pineapple chunks in the fridge and ate a few of those after a couple of hours. The cold and enzymes in the pineapple helped the sore throat. The bruising took another 2 days, but wasn't really bothersome. The whole experience wasn't as bad as I feared it would be.

Hi there, I did not see your first post but want to reassure you that it will be okay. I am an Alpha-1 patient and my recent bronchoscopy is literally saving my life. I had my first bronchoscopy in July, a requirement of the clinical trial I just joined. On the outside I look healthy. 97% lung function and only recently showed the slightest sign of emphysema. Because I "appeared" fairly normal, my doctors did not push for treatment nor felt the need to do a bronchoscopy. My recent bronch for the trial showed the addition of bronchiectasis which normally wouldn't have been detected. I was very scared as I don't do that well under anesthesia and can say it went great. It's best to do it now before you get into cold & flu season. I didn't have any sore throat. Very minor hoarseness and my lungs just felt a little heavy as if I were fighting an infection which was very brief. The night of my procedure I went out to dinner with my spouse & felt very normal. I wasn't even that tired. Now, I have to get another one in December & am actually looking forward to it to see if my treatment has helped my lungs. You've got this.

Hi, I had a bronchoscopy 2 years ago and the test itself was fine. However, an infection showed up two days later which I believe I got from having it done. They said it was the flu ( this was August). I waited for 6 to 8 weeks for the results. Told me I had MAC. The Dr. wanted to start me right away on all 3 meds. I resisted and decided to see an ID Dr. She did not believe I should start on the meds since I had no symptoms. 2 years later and I am still not on the meds and see a new pulmonologist . I do cough up some white mucus, but it's not a lot and does not interrupt my sleep. I do consider myself very lucky since after requesting my records all the way back to 2019, I discovered that a radiologist suspected MAC but my previous pulmo Dr. ( the one that did the bronchoscopy) never told me about. I am debating what I want to do about that! Good luck with your test.

Bbeers I had been treated for bronchiectasis for at least 20 years before I was diagnosed with MAC. Two years before I was diagnosed, the radiologist suspected MAC. I didn’t even know what it was then. When I asked pulmonologist about it she just said that we won’t worry about that unless you have symptoms. I think that’s standard protocol. I wouldn’t be concerned about your first doctor not mentioning it.

Has anyone who has had a bronchoscopy found out anything helpful in terms of dx or treatment?

The main reason that I have bronchoscopies is to determine if I am having organ rejection. I have had the beginnings of rejection a couple of times, but that was able to be remedied.
