Best Meal for CKD that meets nutritional restrictions

Posted by happilyalive @happilyalive, Dec 21, 2025

Hi, I'm having issues in keeping my meals in the right amounts of potassium, sodium, phosphorus, protein, calcium and carbs. I can't eat eggs, beef, fish, tofu or soy. I'm curious as to what each of you would suggest for a breakfast, lunch or dinner that meets the strict Renal Diet parameters. Pitch an idea to me please.

Thanks for your input. I do understand how you feel. It seems that so many foods, beverages, activities are off limits with the older and more unwell we become. Sticking to the healthiest foods we can figure out is good though as well as striving to live our best moments every day. It's not always easy, is it? Sorry about your undergoing stage 4 prostate cancer. How are you doing with it and the myriad of things going on? When you choose the foods closest and easiest to make, do you go with freezer meals or make something at home? If freezer meals, which options have you found that works best for you? Have a great day.

@happilyalive Have you been able to connect with a renal dietician, yet? That might be a good source to help you along. Meanwhile, here a couple of options to look at:

National Kidney Foundation: https://www.kidney.org/nutrition
Renal Support Network: https://www.rsnhope.org/renal-recipes-kidney-friendly/
[this group also offers different support groups, including a foodies group!]

It's a challenge, no doubt about it, to manage our diets. But we also find it is a pretty important part of it all. And worth the effort we put into it.

Thank you for sharing this information with me. Yes, I have an excellent Nutritionist/Dietician. She is working with me on the Renal Diet but also having to figure out with me the issues of Hypertension, Diabetes, Anti-Inflammatory, Autoimmune and Renal Diet. I've only had two meetings with her and one about to happen in January. This next one will be more detailed as Mounjaro is ending with me and I have to figure out how to prevent the glucose from going back up without it. So, every part of the diet right now is about learning various plate methods, foods that are good, bad and sometimes okay. The diet keeps changing however with each thing happening in way of medical conditions. I hope that makes sense.

I greatly appreciate the links and will be digging into them. Research is something that is very helpful and enjoyable. I appreciate your information.

I didn't know about the foodies group. Wow, that is going to be fun, enriching and something to look forward to. Thank you for it also. Your insight, wisdom and advice is very helpful. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

@happilyalive When we have multiple health concerns, with distinctive diet plans, it can seem almost impossible to figure things out. And of course, there are the foods we simply love, which we need to severely limit.

Besides a Renal diet, I have to be concerned with a gout diet and cardiac diet. I simply tell people that my diet is oatmeal, apples, and cardboard LOL

I laughed like mad about your comment of what your diet is. Love your sense of humor, especially when it seems true. 🙂

Have a Merry Christmas

@happilyalive, it's not always easy or convenient to cook, so I ordered some frozen prepared kidney diet meals from Magic Kitchen. They are pricey, but I think well worth it. My husband is a picky eater, and he likes the stuffed shells and the meatloaf meals. I bought some other meals from them that he hasn't tried yet, but so far, so good. I think it's a nice alternative for us at this time, since we are new at this and have a lot to learn. Although many days I feel like chebo1954, there has to be some good quality to life, and some days just feel like giving up and ordering a big pizza.

I think you read my thoughts I was on the way home today from dropping off something to mail and passed a pizza place. I could declare it wasn't whispering my name, but screaming it. Thankfully there was a lot of traffic and there was no way I was going to cross the road to get into their driveway. It was truly an answer to prayer and thanks to God, I didn't get pizza. I have heard of Magic Kitchen but haven't tried them. Thank you for updating me on them and how your husband likes the stuffed shells and meatloaf meals. I'm currently checking into one called BistroMD that works well with kidney patients. Their dietician is helping me to choose meals that fit in the parameters of the renal diet that I'm currently on. I may try both companies to see which is best. My taste buds thank you also. I also agree that having some meals like that is good to have on hand. I do cook most nights but sometimes on a long day a already portioned out meal with the right nutrients is good to have on hand. Have a Merry Christmas and thank you for your input. I greatly appreciate it.

Hello Everyone,

I am currently looking for a renal dietcian, the on closest to me is booked until May 2026. In the meantime I've been trying to manage on my own.

My eGFR is 19 dropped from 25 over a few months.

Any meal and renal dietcian suggestions would be great I live in NY (Hudson Valley)

I searched for over a year to find a Nutritionist/Dietician who could help me manage my diet with ckd, hypertension, diabetes and anti-inflammatory things with my arthritis that haunts me. Thanks to God, my Endocrinologist hooked me up with a great one that I can also meet by phone as needed. She has helped tremendously and even has me reading the books that also teach me what I need to know and do to live my best life. The cost is very reasonable at only $60. for the first session and $30.00 for each one after that. She accepts most insurance or a person can pay out of pocket. If you would like her information then please send me a private message. I'm sorry bout your eGFR dropping to 19. Are you thinking of the future that may hold dialysis? I know that there are many things to work through. My numbers aren't as low as yours but I'm trying to reason out the right things to do also. Please keep us updated on how you are doing. I wish you the best. Happy New Year to you.
