Taking apixaban (Eliquis): Any foods or supplements to avoid?
Morning,
I’m taking Apixaban 5mg twice a day and I was wondering if there is any food or vitamins that I can’t take while I’m in that medication.
Thanks

Hi, I am on Eliquis (Apixaban )5mg twice a day, before having to take it I had a daily shake ,usually "Garden of Life Raw Meal "or "Origain with 50 Superfoods"
However when I read the labels I saw there were lots of green veg, turmeric, ginger, fruits etc in them Can anyone tell me if they have used them while on Eliquis?
I am aware that supplements like Omega 3 and Turmeric as supplements are to be avoided , but as a vegetarian I really am finding it hard to avoid all the green veg I love and have to eat too many carbs. Are the amount of the veg/fruits in those shakes in small enough amounts to be ok for me, if I take the shakes once a day? I have read so many conflicting websites about what you can/can't eat on this drug I hope you can help! Many thanks, everyone!
Welcome @rosaeglantine4me, I have been on Eliquis 5mg twice a day for more than a year and take supplements for my neuropathy that include omega 3 and turmeric daily. I did discuss the supplements with my doctor and they were OK with what I was taking but it is definitely something you should discuss with your doctor.
When I first started on Eliquis at the higher doses following a hospital stay for blood clots in the lung and my right leg, I did stop my neuropathy supplements and was mindful to avoid certain foods as listed here - What foods should I avoid while on Eliquis?: https://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/what-foods-avoid-eliquis-3577939/
Have you had a chance to discuss it with your doctor?
Do you cut the 5mg of Eliquis in half?
Prescription is for 2.5mg tablets twice daily
thank you, no, as I was in the hospital on the 15th, with the embolism so am a bit shell shocked! I have rheumatoid athritis and my consultant though it was caused by Barcitinib which is a biologic immune suppressing drug known to cause thrombosis and embolism
All I know is I will get reviewed in Spring and will be on Eliquis till then.
Did you feel tired on the drug, etc...or is it having had the pulmonary embolism? Many thanks, Hilary
I haven’t noticed any tiredness or fatigue from the Eliquis but I do get tired when I do too much activity during the day. I was tired and stressed out at the hospital during my POE and DVT though.
I’ve taken Eliquis since I had a pulmonary embolism almost 5 years ago. No, I haven’t noticed any differences in my life caused by it, except an occasional minor nosebleed in the winter when the air is dry. ( I have epilepsy also and Eliquis does not seem to exacerbate the epilepsy.)Since leaving the hospital, I started with 5 mg 2x a day, but now it’s 2.5 mg 2x a day. Overall it’s so much easier to live with than the older anti coagulant drugs.
I was on Eliquis last year for about 6 months after an open heart procedure and again after an ablation this year. In both cases, using Eliquis did not affect my strength or endurance as I continued to hike and bike relatively long distances. I am now off Eliquis and back onto daily baby aspirin and that transition was also seamless. Good luck.
