Anyone have Squamous cell cancer and where?
I have a lesion on my left side of my face just below my ear. Does surgery help or is there a medical cream I can use to avoid surgery?

I had MOHS surgery for SCC on the crown of my scalp in Sept, 2023. The incision was fairly long.
The skin tissue only had to be checked in the lab once, so I was “one and done”. The doctor told me that she once had to go back and take tissue 24 times on a patient! Maybe I didn’t use silicone scar gel enough. I didn’t see any significant improvement in the look of the surgical scar for 5 months, and even today it’s quite noticeable. I will never have Mohs surgery done on my scalp ever again. If there is a next time I will do image guided SRT.

1 ReactionI had Mohs surgery on my forehead and on the edge of my mouth down to my chin. The chin was good with one procedure; the forehead needed three. This was right before Thanksgiving. I have a very visible scar near my mouth, I'm using the scar gel daily. If anyone asks, I'll tell them it is a dueling scar!

1 Reaction@flegmonde once I fell and had a bruise and cut on my face. As it healed rather than tell everyone who asked the boring truth, I responded with..."The charges were dropped and that's all I'm gonna say about it!". A laugh was more enjoyable than the truth.

1 Reaction@flegmonde --- One of my many Moh's surgeries was right under my nose and down under my lip, This was done a year and 1/2 ago, and still hurts and is quite visible. I don't think it will ever stop annoying me with a running nose, the pain, and the very tightness in that area. Does yours still hurt & is the scar gel working?
I understand all of the above concerns about visible scarring and discomfort following skin cancer removal. I'd had a large wide local resection followed by a slow Mohs on my face and had a significant scar afterwards from mid nose down to the top of my mouth. I did a couple of rounds of laser resurfacing at my dermatologist's office which provided a huge improvement. It's so faint, it's only noticeable if I point it out to people.

I am sorry that you are still experiencing pain. I am fortunate in that I have no pain. The scar on my chin is still visible, but the scar gel is working. Since my lung cancer surgery, my nasal passages have become very dry and I don't have runny nose issues, even when I swim.

Sometimes I feel like I should find another dermatologist, but in a small and rural area, they don't exist. I have never been offered some of the newer techniques that I hear about here. Laser treatments are not available, nor are
plastic surgeons and their magic scalpels. Travel is too hard for someone of my age & physical condition, and of course the weather! But I am glad to hear about what is offered to other skin cancer patients.

1 Reaction@mermaid7272: The main thing to keep in mind is it's purely cosmetic and truly, it's not impacting your health. Having access to basic health care is of prime importance and it does appear you have that in your favor!

1 Reaction@round5 Each time, at least six,
I have been diagnosed with skin cancer the surgeon is booked up for at least 3 months. He said it makes little difference if any waiting that long. Best wishes.
