Anyone diagnosed with PMR after the Pfizer vaccine?

Posted by mellee @mellee, Feb 28, 2023

I received the Pfizer covid vaccine and had horrible joint pain 8/10 as a side effect. I reported it online. 7 months later I developed horrific joint pain in my shoulders, hips and knees(same pain after the vaccine, but worse). I was ultimately diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica. I wish there was a site to go to and report these things.
I am only 57 and was a runner most of my life up to the age of 51, so I am not in horrible shape for my age. The pain from that PMR was very disabling. I am now on Hydroxychloroquine 200 mg BID and Prednisone 10 mg a day. Not happy about having to take more medications.

Yes, for me it was after moderna and flu vaccines. If you search internet there are a few med articles about people getting PMR after a Covid vaccine. For awhile I was upset about getting those vaccines. Then I read it mainly hits older people with certain backgrounds and genetics, so I may have eventually gotten it anyway.
Overall vaccines have saved many lives or at the very least help avoid long term health issues like long Covid.
I will continue to get a flu vaccine and will avoid the shingles and Covid vaccines.

I had the second Pfizer booster on April 20, 2022. By mid June I could not stand without help and could hardly walk. I hurt from head to toe. It took another 2 months for a diagnosis. Nothing will convince me that it wasn’t the vaccine.

I do not have PMR, but I know about it. I was just reading through things here and noticed your post. My dear retired teacher friend who has never been sick except for an occasional winter bronchitis got the Pfizer vaccine and ended up with PMR. Her doctor said she probably had it in her genetics, but that the vaccine triggered it. She is doing ok now, but it took at least 6 months with medication. It was hard for her because she is so rarely sick. Crazy right!! ( irene5)

Thre common thread is how well people were pre pmr. In 50 years I had zero illnesses no colds.flu nothing. So my theory is my immune system worked perfectly !
Then i had 4 x Covid Jabs 1 x flu jab 1x shingles jab.
Now I have PMR and recently had my first cold in years. I know many people here in the UK who have inflamation of the nervous system. Are the jabs the.cause I will let you guys decide ?

The doctors know the truth pharma companies know the truth and governments do too !
Doctors struggle to diagnose because its never happenrd before in this volume.
We guys pay the price with our health being screwed up possible forever.
They use Covid fear to control our minds. Even though we have PMR many people here still fear Covid! Our lives have been ruined possible forever not by Covid or Long Covid but by PMR GCA and the.inability to move without drugs or severe pain.

Hi, I'm a GCA patient (three years) and have five vaccines with no incidents. Tomorrow I get #6, and I hope it is the same. I have heard of people getting PMR after the vaccine....I have no idea what the percentage is, but it must be fairly small. Knock wood....we shall see how I am in the next few days. Happy Mother's Day to all!!💞

Yesterday I had my sixth shot, and I'm feeling fine and fortunate. I will be flying at the end of June and don't want to take any chances in a closed environment like an airplane. I'll be masked, also. 💞

I'm sorry you have had such a rough time. Each of us has to do what we feel is best....because we have to live with the results. For sure three years on prednisone has left its mark on my body and even though I'm 82, my brain doesn't know it yet and keeps thinking about things I can no longer do. So, I pick and chose.
I judge nobody for what avenue they select. I wound up losing the sight in my left eye before I got properly diagnosed. So, I would probably do just about anything to keep my right eye. We are all driven by different reasons.
I truly wish you the best...it is a rough journey for sure and I am grateful for these support groups.💞

What you posted about a link between COVID vaccines and PMR caught my eye because my primary care physician observed to me that for the longest time he saw no cases of PMR then suddenly began seeing more than a few. After ruminating on it, he told me that these cases seemed to come hard on the heels of the COVID vaccines, and he wondered if perhaps there could indeed be a link.
Don't know what you feel about using Artificial Intelligence for searches, but I just used Google's BARD and asked if there were any link between COVID vaccines and PMR.
Here is what BARD returned:

There is a very small possibility of developing Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. PMR is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation of the muscles and joints. It is most common in people over the age of 50.

A few studies have reported cases of PMR developing after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. However, the risk of developing PMR after vaccination is very low. The benefits of getting vaccinated against COVID-19 far outweigh the risks.

If you develop symptoms of PMR after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, such as pain and stiffness in your shoulders and hips, fever, and fatigue, see your doctor right away. PMR can be treated with medication, and most people make a full recovery.

Here are some of the studies that have reported cases of PMR developing after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine:

A study published in the journal Rheumatology in 2021 found that 1 in 10,000 people who received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine developed PMR.
A study published in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases in 2022 found that 1 in 20,000 people who received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine developed PMR.
A study published in the journal Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North America in 2022 found that 1 in 30,000 people who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine developed PMR.
It is important to note that these studies are observational, which means that they cannot prove that the COVID-19 vaccine caused PMR. It is possible that people who developed PMR after receiving the vaccine were already at risk of developing the condition.

Overall, the risk of developing PMR after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine is very low. The benefits of getting vaccinated against COVID-19 far outweigh the risks. If you develop symptoms of PMR after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, see your doctor right away.

Not bad for an AI search, no?
