Anyone diagnosed with PMR after the Pfizer vaccine?

Posted by mellee @mellee, Feb 28, 2023

I received the Pfizer covid vaccine and had horrible joint pain 8/10 as a side effect. I reported it online. 7 months later I developed horrific joint pain in my shoulders, hips and knees(same pain after the vaccine, but worse). I was ultimately diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica. I wish there was a site to go to and report these things.
I am only 57 and was a runner most of my life up to the age of 51, so I am not in horrible shape for my age. The pain from that PMR was very disabling. I am now on Hydroxychloroquine 200 mg BID and Prednisone 10 mg a day. Not happy about having to take more medications.

I was diagnosed with PMR shortly after receiving the Shingrix vaccine in March of 2021.
My rheumatologist suggested that my PMR was adjuvant induced. (triggered by an ingredient in the vaccine that made my immune system chaotic)
Adjuvant-induced disorders have become so widespread that medical experts have coined a new term to describe this umbrella syndrome: Autoimmune/Inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants (ASIA). 😩

Thank you for this information. I came down with PMR within a week after my second vaccination and I have been very hesitant to get anymore vaccinations at all, even though Shingrix has been recommended to me. I did get the old shingles vaccine about 2 weeks before Shingrix came out, so maybe I have some protection.

I also took the Pfizer Covid vaccine and booster in 2020 as a work requirement. In 2021 I developed eczema and was put on Dupixent then in 2022 developed PMR and now on kevzara after a year of trying methotrexate and lefleudomide which fried my liver I am still unable to get below 3.5 mg prednisone without symptoms flaring.

My husband is the one with PMR and GCA. Diagnosed with PMR May 2023, GCA Feb 2024. For PMR took 30 mg prednisone, tapered down to 12.5 mg when he developed GCA. In the hospital had 3 infusions of 1200 mg methylprednisolone followed by daily 80 mg prednisone for about a month. Then tapering about 10 mg each 2 weeks, now at 30 mg. He's in no pain but has had a lot of side-effects from the prednisone. He's also on Actemra injections weekly. He developed serious osteoporosis which has just complicated matters.

Anyway, I thought I'd give a quick history before discussing the Pfizer vaccine. We took only Pfizer vaccines. We started taking them as soon as they were available because we desperately wanted to go visit our new grandbaby who lived in another state. We faithfully had our boosters as recommended, probably four by now??

All was well until May of last year. I have no idea if his PMR or GCA is in any way related to the Pfizer vaccine. I've had no known affects from taking the vaccines. Hopefully it stays that way.

I wish all of you well. You've all been through so much, like my husband, and I know this is a hard and long road for a lot of you.

I am 77 years old and was in great health preparing for 5K race when hip and knee pain developed with swelling from the ankles to the knees in both legs. Tremendously painful joint and muscle pain with join stiffness. I have been to 18 doctors over the last year. All go back to joint arthritis and recommend knee nd hip replacement. This will not treat the leg swelling-and muscle and muscle pain. Recently diagnosed with PRM and am on Prednisone. The only different variable that no-one will discus is the Pfizer COVID vaccine. Keep being told it has to happen immediately to be considered vaccine related. As a medical professional I do not believe this is true. Would like to hear from others who feel Covid vaccine may have triggered their PMR-Don 30May2024

@bostonredsock1945. The Pfizer vaccine definitely triggered my PMR. There are numerous accounts, on this site, that have made this connection over the last year or so. Many physicians have suggested, to their PMR patients, not to take anymore Pfizer vaccines. Glad you were finally correctly diagnosed.

I had a very similar experience. I am a healthcare worker and had one of the first vaccines. However, I was also working up to 25 hour shifts during the peak of the pandemic. My rheumatologist isn’t sure if the vaccine or the extreme stress set off the PMR. I have done Olympic weightlifting and Crossfit for years and am 54 (dx approx 3 yes ago). I literally feel your pain. I am not familiar with the body I now have and it can be very discouraging. I definitely find support and encouragement on this site. Glad you’re here☺️

I am assuming you are much younger than I am. Do you know if there are any university studies not CDC-funded looking at COVID Vaccine and PMR! What keeps me going is staying optimistic that the PMR will dissipate or become more manageable. It appears the HealthCare industry does not want to talk about this issue. I hope you continue to improve. I would love to run again one day.
