Anxiety about starting Evenity

Posted by pkbs @pkbs, Mar 11 3:36pm

My recent bone scan showed a vertebral compression fracture so my dr wants me to start Evenity. (I’ve had 2 infusions of Reclast in last 2 years) no problems with the Reclast but very nervous about Evenity.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

To all above - do your own research, don’t rely on them to tell you everything and don’t discontinue a drug based on their failures (don’t kill the messenger). Look at the drug website and also seek out other reliable sources eg Mayo Clinic site (beyond the support group page) and specifically Google your reaction and name of drug. Learn the difference between bone building and reabsorptive drugs. Horrible itching is an allergic reaction from what I’ve read tho I don’t remember to which drug. They all have potentially terrible side effects so pick your poison. This group is so helpful for actual experiences and struggles with it all.

I started Evenity injections in March and had my second shot this month. I had no side effects from the first shot. After the second I developed worsening joint pain, fatigue and headaches. I messaged the nurse practitioner about this and she said that since I didn't have any reaction to the first shot these were most likely not side effects from the second Evenity shot and to contact my GP.
I guess I'm just venting here, but I feel that administering the shots is all this particular bone clinic is required to do. They should be able to advise us as to if there are any reactions possible with future shots or at least help us find answers. I'm seriously thinking about discontinuing these shots. But 'one size fits all' seems to be their answer.

@maryelle sorry to hear about itching but going to your primary doctor may be a good idea in case she finds another cause. The side effects of Evenity are also important to research and if your primary doctor doesn’t give you another reason for itching. Maybe an endocrinologist will help you find out if it is Evenity (which isn’t in the specs on Evenity)

Hi
No I didn't have itching. I had joint pain and fatigue. My point basically wad that I felt the Evenity side effects should have been explained better by the nurse practitioner that works for the bone clinic. She said this drug would have the least side effects compared to the other drugs that build new bone.

@maryelle
I must have read it wrong about itching. Sometimes getting a second opinion about these drugs is a good idea and seeing an endocrinologist about Evenity and other osteoporosis drugs may help.

Thanks.
An endocrinologist would certainly know more about these drugs. I'll do that.

@maryelle I was very excited about Evenity. After six months my DEXA scan showed that I lost bone density, instead of gaining it. And I had an aneurysm and TIA at that same time so they switched me back onto Prolia shots.

@souderkirk That's the problem with Advantage plans. I have regular medicare and an AARP supplement, and a part D med plan, though expensive , pays all of evenity.

@sstopalian Sometimes the Medicare "advantage" plans are not an advantage in any way. My understanding is the term "advantage" is a marketing term to get people to believe there is an advantage for selecting that plan.

@sstopalian - wow! Thanks for telling me that Medicare, an AARP supplement and part D pay all of Evenity! Do you mind sharing approximately how much that costs you monthly? Just curious if I should consider this(?)

@souderkirk It is almost $600 a month with part B, D and the AARP supplement. Worth it to me bc many of the best doctors affiliated with hospitals like HSS who take medicare do not take Advantage plans. Advantage pays them even less than traditional medicare. Hope this helps.

@spunkyspinster unfortunately all of us react differently to the drugs. I went from -4.6 to -3.3 with Evenity but I stayed on it for the year.
