Amount of time to see Transplant Team

Posted by artsy0062 @artsy0062, 4 days ago

My husband has.been seen initially and will be passed along to the transplant team for evaluation to be put on the list. How long does that usually take? I am probably rushing the process but I am curious

@artsy0062, Hi and Welcome to Connect. I think that your question is one that every one of us transplant patients has asked! And I think that the answer is that it depends on the scheduling department and the insurance approval.
Did anyone at the initial consult offer any idea about when you might hear from scheduling?

For me. Every case might be different but for me. Local Drs. & Insurance found my liver cancer and said transplant was my only hope. They referred me to Mayo. Mayo requested testing which took 2-3 months. Local folks sent results to Mayo weekly. Then they asked me to come down to AZ to test with them. That testing was about a week after which I was accepted to their transplant program and awaited a new lever. It all worked out. Very best of luck to your husband.

We just got back from the Mayo Clinic in Florida, where my husband did alllllllll of the testing appointments for transplant evaluation. We were there for 12 days, with 33 appointments. It's quite a ride! We have been back home for about ten days and his case will be presented to the transplant board hopefully next week. Fingers crossed... from there, if he is approved for a transplant, he will start three weeks of chemo and radiation, then hopefully make it onto "the List".

@terribwyo I want to extend a Welcome to Connect! As a transplant recipient, myself, I understand how both you and your husband are feeling right now. I can't promise that your feet will feel like they are on steady ground for a while, but you are in good hands with the doctors at Mayo Clinic.
My fingers are crossed, too, for your husband's name being added to the list.

Do you live near to Jacksonville, or will you be a long distance patient?

@artsy0062
Fantastic! I had my transplant at Mayo Rochester in 2009!
If you haven't already done so, look into the Gift of Life Transplant House as a place to stay. It is a clean and safe environment where you can have as much privacy or community as you want. My husband and I stayed there because we live in Kentucky.
@artsy0062 - be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and take a sweater.

Have you received your schedule yet?

@artsy0062
Six weeks must be zapping your patience and your energy as it would do to me. Can you believe that when I was supposed to be scheduled for my evauation (not at Mayo) I was told to expect a call abour an appointment in 4 - 6 weeks. But it didn't happen so I called the transplant department there and heard an "Oops". The scheduler had been replaced and the request for my evaluation appointment was misplaced! I received thr replacement schedule really soon after that! It did not affect my care, but it shows that things can happen - and - can be addressed with satisfaction.

Artsy, I am guessing that when you were told that you would be contacted about when to come back, that they didn't suggest how long it would take until you heard from them.
So, here's are some things that I would consider doing if this was happening to me: (in any order)
- Check your email and phone messages to be sure a correspondence isn't in the spam or unknown file section of your phone or email.
- Call and inquire about the progress in getting a schedule - Do you have the phone number of the doctor that you previously saw there?
- Do you have a Mayo Clinic Patient number assigned to you? Log into the Mayo Clinic Patient Portal and see if there is any progress or communication there.

I hope you learn something.

@artsy0062 We are currently outside of Atlanta, about6 hours from Jaxville, so we will be traveling there. We are wondering, though, whether it's better to just find something to rent there while we wait? I could see that taking months and months, though, and don't really want to do that forever. Any thoughts?

@rosemarya I wish we had ANY sort of a schedule....! We've been in literal limbo since August when all of this began-- we've canceled trips, visits, bucket list travels, etc. and still don't have a schedule of what will happen when. The waiting is the worst- we keep getting 'two more weeks', and 'two more weeks', or 'just one month', etc.
I don't know if the Mayo in Jacksonville has a Gift of Life house? I haven't seen anything about it, anyway. Thanks!
