Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

To everyone, here is the finished copy of more recipes – finished, that is, if nobody has further suggestions or corrections.Feel free to share and to repost in other kidney threads. Please destroy older rough drafts.

This is an excellent resource! You have done an exceptional job putting this together. Thank you so much!

Those of us with CKD are cautioned about hidden phosphates. Many, many processed foods and many baked goods contain phosphates – in baking powder, as a preservative, as a colorant. And if you want a home-baked cake (to be eaten in small portions, of course,) the baking powder you must use contains phosphates.

It doesn't work well to substitute yeast for baking powder in cakes.

BUT, if you can incorporate over 300 mg sodium in final nutrient totals for an entire cake, you can create your own phosphate-free "baking powder" by combining 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda with 1/2 tsp white vinegar for every tsp of baking powder called for in most cake recipes.

Just want to give an update. In July eGFR went from 35 to 20 then down to 8 by Aug 18. Neph appointment tomorrow morning to discuss dialysis prep. Positive vibes needed!

@kamama94 – prayers an positive vibes are on the way.
I know you have diligently and faithfully worked and hoped to delay dialysis as long as possible. And you have done so with an inspiring attitude. I am confident that whatever your future holds will be dealt with in the same manner.

@kamama94 I am so sorry to hear that your eGFR dropped like this. Do you have any insight into why this may have happened? My prayers remain with you. I have held off on a kidney transplant and dialysis for 6 years. So far I am holding steady, but had a severe drop last January. I know it was from too much indulgence during the holidays and have been able to get back to where I was last year. Hopefully you feel better after you start dialysis.

I’m stage 3 not on dialysis yet. I need to change my doctor , dirsnt tell me anything ever.

Well rats, @kamama94! So regret this sudden drop in your GFR numbers and know that whatever plans you and neph discuss at your next appointment, you will approach the next steps with the same bravery and diligence you've exhibited to all of us on this uncertain CKD journey. Sending you continued prayers and cyber strength as you plan ahead. Please let us know how the visit goes and remember your many friends here are rooting for you so keep us in the loop, ok? Hugs to you!

@kamama94, Isn't that an incredibly fast drop for your eGFR values? Any possible clue as to what may have triggered this sudden change? I am so hoping that you'll report back soon following your appointment so your large network of Connect friends can support you as you have strengthened so many of us. Sending you positive vibes, prayers and additional warrior tools as you embark on this next plan of action.

@fiesty76, thank you and thanks to everyone for the powerful support! Neph was doubtful but I think the shingles did horrendous damage. Moot point now. Today is my 75th birthday, maybe my best present will be dialysis to make me feel better. Meanwhile, love and hope still live here. I wish all of you the best!

@nicomejia2009, I am also at stage 3 and like you, have been very disappointed in my three visits with the assigned nephrologist. Changing docs is hard for me but my doc's lack of help or instruction has left me with no other choice. Hope you will post your questions and kidney journey with us because I have learned much of what I know about this diagnosis from others in this forum. I'll be requesting a referral to another neph at my next annual visit with my primary doc. Thinking of you.

Oh, my goodness, friend @kamama94 ! In addition to our shared kidney journey, we also are close birthday sisters! Happy Birthday! My bd was yesterday the 20th and my first gratitude for the day was: "Thank you! I'm still here!" What a year of change and new challenges for us all this has been. I bet your overly long ordeal with shingles did play a large part in your fast changing kidney values. That complication had to have impacted all body systems like a triple whammy! Wishing you the very best as well! Hugs.

@kamama94 when I read about your sudden/big drop in GFR & subsequent gearing up for dialysis I wished for something other than a heart ❤️ or bookmark to respond. I have CKD and have bounced around with GFR 14 – 42 over the past 4 years. I also had shingles during that time. I don’t remember if it had any bearing on the CKD. This year I have mainly tried to avoid Covid as best I can while taking care of myself in every other way. But I haven’t had an in person Dr. visit since February. I go for labs, a Prolia injection and Nephrology visit next week. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I also wish Birthday Blessings for you. Be kind to yourself and take care. Keep us posted on how this journey is going.

@kamama94 Happy Birthday! It seems to me that I've read that some people have managed to improve their numbers and come off of dialysis. That is indeed my birthday wish for you. You've helped and inspired so many of us, and now it's your time – please keep on as you have done so splendidly in the past!
