Share Your Good News Transplant Stories - Like this One

With all the bleak news, we have a lot for which to be grateful. Share your story. In 2021, Georgia helped the nation surpass 41K transplants for the first time in a single year. This milestone is thanks to people like Dawn Martin, who donated a kidney to her first-responder brother and donor mom Charmon Shelnutt. #DonateLife

Thank you for reaching out to me and for your prayers. I am at hospital now. I have had imaging to check my bile ducts for restriction and a liver biopsy for rejection. My bile ducts are fine, so I am in rejection and I also think I’m not going to make it out alive. After all I have been through to have a new life free of sickness and ascites, I have to face this. Just pray

@melissa0919 Oh My, this is something that we all fear and which many of us have experienced. First, I have to assure you that the hospital is a good place for you right now. Your doctors want the best for you and will do everything to enable you to come through this.
I sent a Private Message to you this morning. And I have already mentioned you in:
- "Liver transplant - Let's support each other" because that is where other liver patients share experiences.

.
Is someone with you? - I want you or your support person to click on the above link. Then write a brief message - just like you wrote here about your current situation. I also want to invite @katebw, whom you have already met, to join you there.
Hugs and Prayers ❤️

Don't give up hope. My liver transplant was three and a half years ago and my liver was slow in starting to function and they were doing the same tests on me. At the time I had the same thoughts as you are going through. I will keep you in my prayers

Oh, and @rosemarya, I see that @pjpanning has joined Mayo Clinic Connect. Welcome @pjpanning! It's exciting to have the person who received the first robotic kidney transplant join the discussions here. Real people with real experience sharing and supporting others who are also waiting transplant, recovering from transplant and living well with transplant.

I can imagine as a mother, you were both thrilled and concerned that your daughter was your donor. How are you doing today? How is she doing?

Thanks Colleen, I was thrilled to have my daughter as my donor. I am so proud of her. She is doing great. She is a very healthy strong 37 year old woman. We just hit our 2 months out date yesterday and she says she is pretty much 100%. Of course I was concerned about her, but I felt so confident that she was in good hands. I also am physically feeling great. Amazing how much more energy I have after transplant. I really could tell a difference days after transplant. There are ups and downs with some side affects from the drugs, like interrupted sleep, but these seem to be getting better.

Hi, @pjpanning. I'm glad to see you have found your way to the Connect Transplant Support Group discussions! We met several days ago in the Transplant blog ( I shared the link a few days ago in this group). I will repeat my sentiments of thanks and appreciation to you for accepting to exciting challenge of undergoing the new robotic-assisted kidney transplant at Mayo in Rochester MN. I was impressed to hear of your 2 inch incision with no muscles being cut for the surgery.
Now that you are 2 months post surgery, I suspect that your recovery is following the same path that the rest of us kidney transplant patients experience. I want to invite you to scroll thru the list of transplant support discussions, and to join in anywhere. We would love to walk with you as you continue forward.

I have been following along with this group since before my transplant. I will speak up if I have something to add, thanks. I find these discussions very enlightening. Yes, I’m sure I am going through what most people are at this point post transplant.

I'm doing fine now but I have had a few bumps along the way. In November of 2022 I ended up in the ER with a temperature of almost 103 degrees. To make a long story short, they found that I had developed a blood clot and a small portion of my liver had died. The transplant team told me that the remainder of my liver was functioning fine as all my liver function tests were normal. So we dealt with the infection for a few months and everything is back to normal. Then to make my year complete I developed kidney stones in September and had to have them removed. Now come the strange part is that I am grateful to have had these problems because that means I am still here to be part of my families lives. I have six grandchildren, ( 3 have been born since my transplant) and I tell people because of this gift that I have received they will grow up knowing Grandpa instead of hearing about Grandpa.
So my message is to stay positive your still here.
