Hi @sing1song and @grapette, welcome to the Chronic Pain group! We're so glad you joined the discussion.

@sing1song, thanks for sharing a bit about yourself. Can you let us know where you're experiencing the pain? Have tried any home remedies/relief methods to help subside the pain?

@grapette, would you feel comfortable telling us a little more about yourself?

What if there was an extremely simple genetic test, covered by insurance, that could tell you which medications would work best for you based on your unique genetic profile? There is, this type of genetic testing is know as Pharmacogentic testing (Profiling). The test is performed by colleting an individual's DNA through a noninvasive buccal swab.

Physicians can now screen patients prior to prescribing a wide spectrum of medications within several different therapeutic drug categories.

Here is a link with more information
http://mayoresearch.mayo.edu/center-for-individualized-medicine/drug-gene-testing.asp
This now takes the trial and error out of prescribing medicine. So many of us have the issue of medications don't work for us or we have to try so many with terrible side effects before (if we are lucky) we find the right drug or combination of drugs.

The each test is done once (4 types, Thrombosis, Cardiovascular, Mental Health, Medical Management) because our genetic make up does not change. Depending on the lab you use, the results are very simple to read. You are given a card that has your results for you share with any healthcare provider needed. (ER, Hospital, Specialists, Primary Care, etc..)

My pain is in my lower back and legs. I have been to three neuros and had countless MRI's and exrays. PT makes things worse. Drugs don't work. I have been tested for neuropathy and don' t have it.

Chronic Pain? Uh-huh. My entire body is divided between pain and peripheral neuropathy. My Mayo personnel seem to be afraid to give me a diagnosis they would not want for themselves, so they just say it is psychiatric. Which just makes me angry at the lie. It is no wonder the med community is losing respect, just as government, law, education, clergy and police. I would not visit any medical institution if I could get my medicine and the few procedures I need, otherwise.

old karl

You are here! Maybe just need some support and know you are not alone. I was convinced at one time that a mental health appointment was an option, I mean why not . . .my pain was driving me crazy!? It turned out to be a positive experience as I was able to communicate with practicing physicians much better which then got me some help. Real help, not a cure but help. Have a better day! Listen to some music, read a book, make an appointment . . .action alone will help. Glad you reached out!

Hello everyone, I have thoracic outlet syndrome on the left side of my upper body. This occurs when the rib and collar bone meet and block the flow of blood from either the veins or arteries and the related nerves to various parts of the arm, hand, scapula and every thing else you can think of. Unfortunately it affected all three in my body. I had a corrective thoracic surgery but the nerves were apparently permanently damaged. I was told the surgery would completely alleviate the pain. It did not. I also had a c5-c6 fusion of my cervical spine. I have done everything under the sun to alleviate the pain. After all the surgeries were completed I was left with only mild relief of the pain and am now stuck taking a large amount of pain meds.
Pain has effected me in many ways. I lost my job, I can't work, I can't drive and I sleep a lot. Having been such and active person, I never planned on living such existence. I am working on decreasing the amount of medication I take and my pain doctors have told me when the nerves have been in pain a long time, it can take a while for the nerves to settle once the medication is taken away.

I promise I won't be this long winded in the future, but I did want to give a little back ground on my current situation. I look forward to being part of this group mostly to listen, but occasionally to contribute. It is difficult to type at times. And that time is now. Thanx for letting me ramble. Lorrie
