Questions about Reclast for osteoporosis.

Posted by phoebejo @phoebejo, Apr 16, 2016

My endocrinologist has recently recommended Reclast for my osteoporosis. I have TMJD and also type 2 diabetes which I believe puts me at greater risk for a heart condition. My research indicates that side effects of Reclast can do damage to the heart (atrial fibrillation) and bone disfuregurement in the jaw. I. Would like to know when Reclast was introduced and the efficacy stated in percentages. I have seen information that indicates fatal outcomes for small numbers but nothing to compare that too in terms of successful treatment.

Hi @phoebejo, and welcome to Connect. I found some information on Reclast from Mayo Clinic that I think you may find helpful (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/osteoporosis/in-depth/osteoporosis-treatment/art-20046869).

I'm tagging @pkd1 and @nancymc, as these two members have shared their experiences with Reclast.

Is there a specific reason your doctor recommended Reclast? How is your current treatment plan going?

I have taken Reclast infusions for the last 3 years, which is the maximum
no. of doses until more studies are done. I experienced no side effects,
but I don't have cardiac or diabetic issues. I have osteoarthritis &
osteoporosis, as far as bone/joint diagnoses go and am a 66 year old Asian
female, 5'2.5", & 125 lbs. I have had slight increases in bone density in
my left hip & spine.
My MD plans to start me on Prolia injections this year.
I took recast for 5-6 years. Then started the Prolia. Now my doctor wants to put me back on recast. Has anyone else been put back on recast.

@toad99 and welcome to connect. We’re all volunteers here, sharing our difficult health journeys as we try to help each other. What did your doctor explain to you about the change back to reclast? Quite a few people on this site have the same question and, like me, are confused about the drugs. Any info you have would be most helpful! How long were you on Prolia?

REPLY

The reason for wanting to put me back on Reclast is because my kidneys were so good.!!!!! But she also admitted that because of administration expenses they could not give me the Prolia shot. I was on Prolia for about 3 or 4 years. This really is very confusing. They can do the infusion for reclast but not inject Prolia.

Hello,
My MD recommended I get Reclast infusion but reading all the side effects really has me worried. I am healthy, exercise regularly but my numbers went down after the last bone scan. I have scheduled it for next month and am planning to go on vacation at the end of the month, should I wait? It's about a week and 1/2 after the infusion, I can change it and wait until hafter I come back. Any thoughts would be helpful. My jaw is fine but the side effects are very worrisome!
Thank,
np

I just had an infusion and had a rash on my face for one day afterward. Also, strong join pain in left knee for three days and then it was gone. I am worried also and always looking for other ways to strengthen my bones.

I have osteoporosis and received the Reclast infusion on May 13th of this year. My joint pain is becoming worse than before the infusion. I'm 71 y/o so this could be due to the aging process, however just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My endocrinologist wants me to take another infusion in the spring of 2024. I'm not sure I want to do this. My endocrinologist also told me that there's no pain with osteoporosis. She's in her early 20s.

I took five injections of Prolia and my DO said I could stop taking it so I did. A year and a half later the bone scan shows a big reduction in my numbers. I see an endocrinologist and she wants me to take fosamax for a month and then get reclast injections. I had a severe reaction to fosamax years ago so she wanted to be sure this wouldn’t happen again. One pill and I am feeling more back pain in one week. So worried about the side effects of reclast, I had no problems taking the Prolia. The doctors says if you go on prolia you have to take it for the rest of your life. If you go off Prolia your numbers always go down.

I took 3fosamax pills to see if I had a bad reaction before taking Reclast. After the 3rd pill my jaw and all my lower teeth are in pain and I have mouth sores. Now I don’t want to take fosamax or reclast ever again.
