Has anyone used Mucomyst (acetylcysteeine nebulization?

I would be interested in hearing about your experiences- was it helpful in loosening sputum and were there side effects or other inconvenience?

Hello @dulwich
I was prescribed Mucomyst and use it once in the evening. My first breathing treatment is in the morning with 0.07 saline. I have a productive huff cough with both. I am not seeing a big difference between the two. Other than the smell of “eggs” it’s seems to be similar to my other breathing treatments.

@dulwich I use N-acetylcysteine in tablet form, twice a day, to help thin mucus. It has helped me avoid exacerbations caused by an accumulation of thick, sticky mucus. That has been a problem of mine for many years, and the NAC seems to make is less sticky, both in my sinuses and lungs.

@sueinmn thanks for sharing that N-acetylcysteine can be taken in pill form. It's been hard to get in the liquid form and could save time.

For awhile, I nebulized glutathione with the idea being getting it directly into the lungs. NAC is a precursor to glutathione, which means NAC creates glutathione. Instead of swallowing a NAC tablet, which has go through the gut and then be distributed around the body, I figured inhaled glutathione was more direct. But glutathione for nebbing was expensive so I switched to NAC tablet form.

I take 600mg twice a day but I wonder if an increase in the tablet dose might be helpful? Has anyone else used glutathione via nebulizer?

Hi Sue:
Do you take both guaifenesin and NAC on a daily basis? Can you please describe the difference and benefit of using both? Thanks.

Yes. Both thin mucus. N AC also has some anti-inflammatory properties. It may also protect kidneys and based on health and family history I am at risk for kidney disease.

I had been nebulizing glutathione every other day. I do not find it expensive but not sure how much it helps. Just recently I decided to use it twice a week rather than every other day. The last time I tried NAC it gave me insomnia.

@irenea8 When you comment not sure how much inhaled glutathione helps, what about your flare/infection rate (non-MAC)? Has it decreased, remained the same or increased?

Having chronic mucoid pseudomonas I always have some flare/infection. But given my situation I would say worse flares have been less. However I am doing a lot of other things so it is hard to say which has helped.

I take NAC 600 and it doesn't help. I have taken it since 2001
