Has anyone used Mucomyst (acetylcysteeine nebulization?

I would be interested in hearing about your experiences- was it helpful in loosening sputum and were there side effects or other inconvenience?

My original pulmonologist thought it was the result of long-term asthma, extensive exposure to irritants (paper dust, asbestos and soil particles) and repeated bouts of bronchitis and pneumonia, going back to childhood. In addition, I meet the criteria for "Lady Windemere Syndrome" - older female, slight frame and lifelong low body weight.

Related to all you wrote above....
Certain events that we have lived through in the last couple of decades brought me to the conclusion that things happen and more than likely it is more than one thing (a culmination of things and events) that caused the problem, sad event or health problem.
I think one could add STRESS to one of the reasons we find ourselves being diagnosed with BE. Stress causes harm to the immune system, we might go into depression and as well either eat wrong or just not eat. My two cents worth because of my looking back to answer my question to myself..."How did this happen, what caused this BE."
I can repeat a a good couple of things you mentioned along with the stress factor I was in from childhood and in adulthood. Forward we go with the knowledge and understandings we now have!

Hi Barbara -
My life, at least most of it, has not felt stressful to me, because I have always had an amazing support system around me. Our diet has always been healthy, focused mainly on fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, dairy, fish and moderate amounts of red meat.
But I do feel my bronchiectasis was the culmination of the many assaults, throughout my life, on my lungs. I forgot to mention in my earlier post that in every generation, we have had several severely asthmatic people, so heredity plays a big role. I grew up between a coal-fired power plant and heavy industry, near the railroad tracks in the "inner city". The tracks, backlots of the factories, and riverfront formed part of our playground as kids, and a lot of what we played on and around has since been banned as hazardous. The air quality left a lot to be desired, and several members of my family have always had lung issues as a result.

Oh my Sue-
"I grew up between a coal-fired power plant and heavy industry, near the railroad tracks in the "inner city".
I read a while back, and it does sound logical, that once a healthy person's cells/genes have changed due to factors such as you mentioned (coal fired power plant etc.)....those bad cells/genes that they developed are passed onto the off springs (children etc.) . I know that our cells can be altered after birth but had not thought of our genes being altered ....and the way that they work.
My Mom was into good nutrition and vitamin C supplements etc, when we were kids growing up. We ate healty meals and had very little sugary foods etc. I have, more so now that I was diagnosed with the BE, avoided sugary foods and most of the things we know we should not indulge in...especially often. So yes...fruits, veggies, beans, lentils, seeds, nuts, poultry, some fish, and a steak or burger once in a blue moon. Oh, and that favorite of mine...ice cream once in a blue moon.
I just didn't know how detrimental/harmful/damaging etc. etc. our environment could be to those of us who have had illnesses that affected our lungs and could be one of the underlying reasons we end up developing BE eventually.
I enjoy your shares and helpful information!
Barbara
