Treating Osteoporosis: What works for you?

Posted by heritage1955 @heritage1955, Apr 1, 2016

Hi. I'm new to the site and am interested in treating osteoperosis. I'm 39 yo and recently had a bone density that showed I'm at -2.4. So, going through the intial "I can't believe it" stuff. 🙂

Is that the T score or the Z score?

I just heard of success w/ a new fusion technique using a CT scan during the operation to treat spondylothentisis (displacement of vertebrae); does anyone know if this treatment can be applied to vertebrae broken due to osteoporosis?

Hello @cynthia1, and welcome to Connect. I moved your discussion and combined it with a very extensive discussion regarding treating osteoporosis in the Bones, Joints & Muscles group on Mayo Clinic Connect. I moved your discussion here because there is a long list of other members talking about treatments for Osteoporosis.

@cynthia1, would you care to talk a little bit more about the fusion technique you have heard about? What is the technique called? Is it a treatment that you have discussed with your physician?

Thank you for moving my discussion to the appropriate spot. I didn't see osteoporosis listed so went w/"chronic pain." This fusion procedure for my neighbor's vetebrae I just heard about yesterday so haven't discussed it w/an MD who knows my condition. She explained that the spine is repositioned the way it's supposed to be, and wires/screws are used which do not need to be removed. Muscles are not cut. My bones probably aren't strong enough to withstand this idea. I don't have a name for the procedure other than "fusion." In 4-6 mos the patient will be able to go skiing! The need for this stems from an accident at age 7.

There is a new tool based on advanced techniques that you can give your symptoms and it would give you matched diseases.

Is there a spinal fusion procedure that would work w/ compression fractures of thoracic spine?

The compression fractures are due to osteoporosis.

Hello @cynthia1.

I would like to bring @suee, @amy75, and @grammyx4 in to the conversation as they have spoke about spinal fusions in the past and may be able to offer more information on if a spinal fusion procedure would work for a compression fracture.

@cynthia, when you first mentioned this procedure you were unsure of the name of the technique. Did you learn the name of this procedure from your physician? Is this a surgery that has been recommended to you?

I haven't yet talked to my MD about it; I head about it from a neighbor who just had a success w/the procedure this wk though her spinal problem is different from mine. When I called the dr's office, I was told he does see patients w/osteoporosis, but my appt isn't until Apr. I just wondered if anyone knew anything about the possibilities w/my challenge.

Thank you for the extra information @cynthia1. I am glad to hear that you do have an appointment, even though April can seem like a long time to wait. I have tagged other members who have had a spinal fusion, hopefully they can add some incite in to the question that you are seeking an answer to.
