I have acid reflux so bad it is coming up into my sinuses

I have acid reflux so bad it is coming up into my sinuses. I was only taking one Nexium (40mg) and then the Gastro added Raniditine (300) mg at night. I have started cutting them in half and it is getting better, but my sinuses and throat hurt all the time. My stomach is upset, and I have explosive gas. I've elevated my head at night. How can I get this to settle down?

I had acid reflex for years and back in September it then became acid reflex on steroids now upgraded to GERD. My acid reflex was so bad I thought I got poisoned. My throat was on fire from my tonsils to stomach. My stomach hurt so bad I could barely sit. I tried three different acid reflex pills and it took four months to get it under control. 40ml of omperzole 1/2 hr before breakfast and again 40ml before dinner. God forbid I forget to take the pills my chest gets stabbing pains and then the fire burning sensation kicks in.
You need to keep trying different pills and brands. And it does take a few months to get it under control.
Wish you the best..

Wow. It is strange that our medical community doesn’t realize that we are subverting the body’s nature tendency to come to balance. The more we repress the stomach acid, the more we get.
I am now two months off the second dosage of Prescription Antacids – it is like detox. It takes some time to find an equilibrium. I don’t know if I can ever look an orange or a raw tomato in the face again, but at least, I feel like “most” of the food I eat is not just running right out of me.
I miss Indian food, spicy Mexican, and I cannot look a garlic clove in the face. But, I don’t spend all morning on the toilet screaming anymore either:}
@robbinr, with so much information on the Internet many of us bring a possible diagnosis to our medical appointments. The important thing is that you worked with your doctor to find the diagnosis. I, too, am a sufferer of chronic sinus infections. However, I've never had acid reflux type symptoms like the ones you describe in your original message. Have your stomach issues settled now that the sinus infection is being taken care of?

@dandl48 @boogirl @rexanna really appreciate your suggestions about managing reflux. This is such a common condition and your tips will help others looking for help.

I also have acid reflux. My doctor told me to elevate the head of my bed and to not eat anything after 7:30. Also, I stopped eating a number of acid producing foods such as tomatoes and tomato based foods. So far this is helping. Perhaps this will help you. Carol
Thanks! I haven’t had any nightshade veggies or oranges for over a year now. I miss oranges!
@robbinr I have developed Barrett's Esophagus after my many years battling reflux. the muscle that controls the acid from coming up from my stomach is very weak and since I have Barrett's in the location of the weak muscle it can't be tightened thru surgery since it would effectively hide the Barretts and potentially it turning in to cancer. Therefore I need to take double the recommended dose of Nexium to control the reflux. Spicy food does increase my reflux if I forget to take Nexium but so does oatmeal.

Hi. I have the same problem. I'm so sorry. It is very terrible. The medicines I'm on I wouldn't recommend to an enemy but they do bring some relief. I don't even want to name them. I have autoimmune disease so I hope that when I get treatment for my disease I can get off of my medicine for this.
I have a positive development! I just made an appointment for next month with a rheumatologist connected with the Mayo clinic in Pittsburgh (I live in Florida but he's the expert in my rare disease)! I'm so excited!
Do you have allergies, asthma or autoimmune disease?

A friend commented to me yesterday that her doctor advised her to take Gaviscon or similar medication instead of increasing the dosage of potentially harmful acid reduction drugs. I had increased Prilosec 40mgms in am to an additional 40mgms at night per order of my GI doctor. I still have reflux after several weeks of added dose and now my leg cramps have increased from the increased dosage. I am going to try the Gaviscon advice and will let you know if it works. Some things work for some people and not others.

Hi! I have a hiatal hernia and GERD and I have taken some sort of PPI for at least 30 years. My gastroenterologist put me on 24-Hr Nexium 40mg (1 pill daily), a number of years ago and told me to take Gaviscon between doses -- If needed. I found that it "usually" works for me; however, there are times when it does not seem to do much. When I have continuing symptoms, I take another Gaviscon pill within 1 to 4 hrs.

We all have our individual crosses to bear. I find that when nothing helps, that a little bit of bitters in warm water seems to do the trick. But everyone is different. I always make sure I have bitters in my cupboard, though! I ASSume you have done the food diary, and might have an idea about what sets you off. Avoiding those "trigger" foods can be soul-wrenching, but ultimately beneficial.
Oh, the things I can no longer eat! And how I miss them so. But, I don't miss the miasma they send my all too delicate stomach into!
Finding that I was being over-prescribed anti-acids was the kicker for me. My Doctors were making me worse, denying such a thing as "kick-back" acid production brought me back around to the more homeopathic, gentle remedies - like - eat some Kim Chi!

I,have hiatus hernia too. No *meds helped,, and i now have Cinnamon tea
with a piece of fresh ginger in every morning and have hardly any
problems since*. The Cinnamon i use is the quills (Health Food store)and
must be CEYLON cinnamon. But if you cant get the quills,,Ceylon Cinnamon
power will do, just strain it through a tea strainer after you've added hot
water to,it and leave to steep for 5 mins.
