Acid reflux: Anyone out there?

Posted by artist28374 @artist28374, Jul 7, 2011

Anyone out there? I have this bad. But also have been throwing up and diarrhea. Am trying to find out what causes the second situation. Thanks. T in Pinehurst NV

@artist28374 -I have suffered from acid reflux (GERD) for years due to a small hiatus hernia. I take a Prevacid capsule at bed time and have the top of my bed raised on risers (available in any bedding store or Amazon) and that has helped me a lot. I also stop eating and drinking fluids by 9:00 p.m. I sometimes have episodes of reflux pain during the day (or even during the night, although rarely) and these episodes are relieved just by sipping a bit of water. Pain/burning subsides in minutes.

@candidough47 - the risers go under the legs/casters of the bedframe at the head of the bed. I have had to eliminate the headboard on my bed because the risers make a headboard a bad fit. At least, in my experience I haven’t found a headboard yet that would work with the risers under the top of the bed (frame).

Bed risers are found in any bedding store - and definitely on Amazon.

Risers are probably more economical, but you can also buy a wedge. I bought a full body wedge from Amazon. It's basically a graduated piece of foam that goes under the mattress and elevates the upper part of the mattress.

@robertatheriveter - I would imagine that would flatten over time …? And those foam wedges are/would be expensive to replace … I bought my risers almost twenty years ago for under $20 and you can still get them for under $20.

@candidough47 - bed risers come in sets of four, but you need just two for under the legs/casters at the top of your bed.

I find that plain crackers help me get through the day.

Has anyone experienced a sore throat from acid reflux. I have had a sore throat for a few weeks and ENT thinks it is from my acid reflux problems, but I have never had that symptom before with the acid reflux. I take two Omeprazole capsules daily.

Yes I have gotten a sore throat from reflux,

Omeprazole is only supposed to be given for weeks but it seems everyone I know is on it permanently. Your body responds by making more acid, I was told, so it can be hard to get off. You can replace it with Pepcid or Zantac then taper off. If you ever want to get off.
