Hello, please visit the website “the kidney project”. It seems wonderful to me. Complete the easy form to put your name in the database. They say it should be available in 2020. UCSF, Dr. Shuvo. Read about it.

Hi @kathleenla, and welcome to Connect. You'll see that I moved your message about a bioartifical kidney to this discussion that @gregsr started a while back. He, too, is excited about the possibility of this innovation.

Here's the link to the UCSF website that Kathleen refers https://pharm.ucsf.edu/kidney The frequently asked questions page for patients is particularly informative https://pharm.ucsf.edu/kidney/device/faq

Kathleen, What is your interest in the project? Do you have kidney disease?

Hello, yes, I am indeed a kidney patient. I have been on dialysis previously, had a very successful transplant for 14 years and am now back on dialysis for the past 8 years. I received a personal response from Dr. Shivo and I am very encouraged. How about you?

I stand corrected. I misspelled the doctor’ name; it should be Dr. Shuvo. Sorry. Kathleen

Are you awaiting a second transplant?

REPLY

I am waiting for the bioartificial kidney because I had complications from one of the former transplant drugs, Prednisone. The whole experience was wonderful, but my bones could not handle the steroid.

kathleenla, This is extremely interesting to me. I am 9 years post transplant, and have been off prednisone for 4 years. The doctors are monitoring my kidney, which is to be expected. My only bone issue is osteopoenia . Being female, post menopause, and post transplant are all of concern, however.
You have mentioned that you are back on dialysis.
This is new to me and I am curious. I look forward to hearing from you to learn more about your experience.

Are you on the transplant list concurrent with your wait for the artificial kidney?
Would you care to share some of what kind of encouraging information you received in your response from Dr Shuvo?

Hi, Rosemarya.

Yes, I am awaiting the bioartificial kidney. There is no waiting list because they estimate it will be ready about 2020 or so. They will contact everyone in their database. This miracle will be available to all patient who need it, through their medical facility.

I received a personal response from Dr. Shuvo. I am so happy I am beside myself. I am age 65 also post menopausal. Osteroposis to. I will later.

Bye.

Rosemary, I apologize for the abrupt goodbye in my last response to you. I did not realize it was time to be disconnected from dialysis.

When Dr. Shuvo from UCSF responded to my email, he discussed where they are in the project and expect to begin clinical trials in 2020. Afterward they expect to be approved by the FDA and will provide this product to all those who need it. If you Google (the kidney project) it will contain ( Frequently Asked Questions). This is very informative.

I do not believe I mentioned that my medical problems began when I developed Type 1 Juveniles at age 9; I am 65 now. Kidney failure at age 40; first kidney transplant at 40. It lasted 14 years and failed at age 55 or so. The failure was due to the Type 1 Diabetes and anti rejection drugs. Since then, eight years ago, I have been on dialysis.

Please take care and write if you can.

Kathleen

Hi, Kathleenia, I accept your apology, and now I offer you mine.
Thank you for sharing the information. The advances in medical treatments is and for amazing. I am happy to live in this age of innovations. I hope and pray that the timing for FDA approval will come soon.

How are you feeling during this interim? And how are you being monitored now that your kidney has been rejected? I honestly do not know what this experience might be like for you. I appreciate learning from/with you.

There has been a flurry of activity in the Kidney and Bladder Group, where some members are discussing CKD diets. I want to share these with you, just in case you have something to share, or if you are looking for information. I am finding it extremely interesting. I have a feeling that you have a wealth of knowledge from your 14 year kidney history.
