Nausea every time after I eat, after gallbladder removal.

Posted by sheashelton @sheashelton, Nov 19, 2022

I had my gallbladder removed about four weeks ago on October 20th, and now every time after I eat, I get really nauseous and throw up. Is this normal?

Wow, that could have been written by me a year ago! They send you home right after surgery with a note that says "resume normal diet tomorrow" - but they took away part of your digestive system -the bile pump. And if you were like me, you weren't eating a normal diet before surgery because of your issues.

After a couple of days of nausea, I figured out I needed to eat small amounts of non-fatty foods several times a day. Think half an apple, half a protein drink, a handful of crackers. Soup was my friend. It took about 3-4 months before I was eating a light meal at a sitting, and another 3 months before I could eat 3 ounces of beef or pork in a meal. A year later, I still don't digest fat well enough to eat 2 eggs or a moderate steak in one meal. My liver has only reluctantly taken over the gall bladder's job.
If cutting way back doesn't help, it's time to call the doctor - you may need a dietician consult, especially if you have any other issues like diabetes.
Have you asked the surgeon or your doc about what you are experiencing?

I called my doctor today, and she told that I’m experiencing postcholecystectomy symptoms and that it shouldn’t be long term. Said to change my diet up

My nutritionist recommended taking a bile supplement. It helps a lot.

I am 2 years post op, for the first year I was throwing up constantly, sometimes food, other times stomach bile, usually in the projectile form. This past year though it has changed, including the foods I am tolerant to, now I almost never puke up food, and now atleast 2-3 times a week (usually in the earlier part of the day) I dry heave, puke up foam and stomach bile. Sometimes I get so hot from the heaving that I have to lie down. 80% of my stools are either liquid or diarrhea, and sometimes I pass a movement 3 times or more in an hour. Basically, life sucks. I've had to quit 3 jobs because I can't handle hardly anything physical anymore. Between the puking, dry heaving and weird bowel movements I almost never have much energy anymore. I get random paints in the front and backside of my body all the time and it doesn't matter if I eat 1 cracker or 700 I am still sick and stuck being a slave to the bathroom.

It's been 2 years. Whats the next step? Is there anything that isn't marijuana that I can take for all this nausea? It makes it almost impossible to work any job.

Are there any that you can recommend? Preferably one that is not a huge pill because thanks to my problems I have hard time swallowing large pills.

Concerning swallowing large pills, I have found that turning my head to the side while swallowing them with the water makes the pills go down more easily!

Hello, eleko28. With the pain you are having, it sounds like it would be best to see a physician to figure out what is causing that.
You said something about foods you are tolerant to-- what can you say about that? What foods have you found easier to tolerate and which ones have you found to cause problems?
