Eliquis side effects

Posted by betyna @betyna, Apr 20, 2023

3 months ago I had a blood clot removed from my Mesenteric artery.
I have been on eliquis 3 months, I am having leg pain, weakness, and I am fatigued. Do all blood thinners make people tired and weak?

I think you may have something else going wrong causing your leg pain and lethargy as a clot preventing drug should not have these symptoms. Are on any other drugs like a statin or beta blocker? Revisit your physician sooner than later. I have been on Eliquis 6 months and no side effects. Best of luck.

I appreciate your response.
Been to several doctors & more to come in next 3 months. I have no other issues, not diabetic, no high cholesterol, no other medication except the ones I’ve been taking for 10+ years.
Thanks again!

Beta blockers and other heart medications might cause some of what you mention, but apixaban is quite innocuous. I agree with Daniel, there is something else at play here.

Thank you so much for your reply.
At my vascular doctor apt today we discussed possible other causes.
I really do appreciate your confirmation.

I should probably start out by saying I'm in medicine and also married to a Dr, so I do have a good awareness of what is normal and not normal. I had an episode of Atrial Fib (resolved completely for 3.5 months) and was placed on Eliquis 5 mg, twice a day. Within 2 weeks I had a bizarre onset of severe numbness in my toes. A week later I started having muscle spasms all over my body and some weakness too. These spasms are not like the ones you get when you've worked out. They might be in the compartment of my thumb, then my whole hamstring muscle, then in muscles between my ribs, all in the same hour! I was a very healthy and very active person used to exercising daily, so these changes have REALLY been unusual! Another thing I've noticed is that about 2-3 hours after I take the Eliquis, I'm so tired I want to lay down and sleep. Now, I'm a high energy person who NEVER goes to sleep before midnight (and NEVER takes naps!), but for 2 months now I've been falling asleep by 9 pm at night! I'm also laying down for a nap around noon. It's VERY bizarre! Maybe I wouldn't complain as much if it was good sleep at night but I'm jumping up with muscle spasms all night long. They have ruled out other systemic causes of these issues and I finally believe it must be caused by the Eliquis. I don't think this medication is benign as the company is making the Drs believe.

Perhaps you are one of the very rare cases where, for whatever reason, you simply cannot tolerate apixaban. If you have been steadily in this condition for some time, you could always risk stopping for a week to see if the condition quietens, in which case......maybe you need another medication to cut your risk. However you decide, please check out your plan with your care provider first.

Interesting symptoms. As previously stated discontinuing and replacing with perhaps chewable aspirin 2x a day to see if symptoms disappear would prove it was the Eliquis. I stopped taking it after 9 months and my intermittent bouts of diarrhea disappeared! I replaced with chewable aspirin 2x a day. I am sleeping better too!

I have been on Eliquis for since 2022. I have checked the side effects information and they do cite them. I have one when I take it in the AM .. I feel "loopy" in AM about 10-15 minutes after I take it ... that effect can last various amounts of time. With food or no food. They don't use the the same word ("loopy") but that can be a side effect. I take other cardio Rx during the day at different times, the Eliquis doesn't affect me (second dose) at the end of the day.

I take so many meds a day anymore hard to know what affects what .... been on Eliquis since 8-2022 after a stroke I was on Plavix for years then the Dr. never noticed that it had stopped working and caused me to have a stroke.
