Other causes of failed PEth test for alcohol abuse?
My daughter undergoes periodic peth testing for alchohol abuse. She fails regularly, although swears she drinks NOTHING. We have reason to believe she is telling the truth. Assuming she is indeed not drinking, is there a physical condition or ailment that might produce positive peth tests? She is 29, has enlarged lymph nodes, some kind of mysterious condition that gives her severe hives, etc. We are wondering if some type of autoinflammation or autoimmune condition might explain elevated levels. Our daughter is FINALLY discussing this with her regular doctor but if it is some unusual condition a specialist will be needed. The reason the peth test is required is due to a nasty custody dispute with lots of allegations of misconduct. I just want to know if there is ANYTHING other than alchohol consumption that can lead to positive test results. Any thoughts or knowledge of cases? Thanks for reading.

1 ReactionI noticed that when the phlebotomy tech drew my blood she wiped an alcohol swab on my arm. I asked my doctor to enroll me in random urine test. I know when I fail the PeTh test when I get blood drawn because the tech doesn't know how to draw the blood. I think next time I get the test Im going to ask for non alcohol swab. I went a whole month without drinking I should have passed the test but they measured 30ng. Its frustrating.
The alcohol from the swab does not go into your blood. The tiny amount of fluid from the swab they may be left on your arm evaporates very quickly. There is a GI illness I have heard of that causes the body to breakdown foods and this makes alcohol. I believe it is an endocrine disorder called Auto-Brewery Syndrome or gut fermentation syndrome but it is rare. Hope this helps you out. My one question is do both your urine and blood alcohol level support the findings?
Mike, I need you to send me whatever information you have. I I was completely abstinent from alcohol from December 9 to March 3 when my PEth test was taken. The USDTL specifically states in their instructions to the collector, that they should not use an ethanol-based hand sanitizer to wash their hands before testing. The woman administering my test used a 70% ethanol based hand sanitizer immediately before pricking my finger and administering the test. I have this proven on video. I confronted her about it and she’s trying to tell me that it’s OK to use and that USDTL says it’s OK. Obviously, it’s not OK if it’s in bold letters on their instructions not to use it. I’m involved in a very highly contentious custody dispute, where my past is being used as my present and my ex is trying to take away my rights so she can move across the country with my son. I need your help.

It is true the test is not for alcohol, but exposing your blood to alcohol can create peth invitro, or outside of the body.
I have personally read correspondence from usdtl where one of their lab rats said peth gets formed in the liver only, THAT is how poorly they operate.
I read a paper from the 60s where, the Swiss I believe, were making peth using chicken egg yolks, peanuts and ethyl alcohol.

I have to take a Peth test later this week. I have been abstinent since March 5th, 2020. I have an inflammatory disorder and get monthly injections. I am scared to death of this test. My nursing license is on the line.
Absolutely don’t do a blood spot peth test. Veinous blood draws have a better, but flawed, record.
All I know is that correct collection protocol needs to be followed precisely. I recommend filming the entire event.
