Other causes of failed PEth test for alcohol abuse?

Posted by gjones1956 @gjones1956, Nov 14, 2017

My daughter undergoes periodic peth testing for alchohol abuse. She fails regularly, although swears she drinks NOTHING. We have reason to believe she is telling the truth. Assuming she is indeed not drinking, is there a physical condition or ailment that might produce positive peth tests? She is 29, has enlarged lymph nodes, some kind of mysterious condition that gives her severe hives, etc. We are wondering if some type of autoinflammation or autoimmune condition might explain elevated levels. Our daughter is FINALLY discussing this with her regular doctor but if it is some unusual condition a specialist will be needed. The reason the peth test is required is due to a nasty custody dispute with lots of allegations of misconduct. I just want to know if there is ANYTHING other than alchohol consumption that can lead to positive test results. Any thoughts or knowledge of cases? Thanks for reading.

PEth is generated by the enzyme Phospholipase D (of which there are several subtypes). The activity of Phospholipase D is elevated (from normal) in several autoimmune diseases, most notably Multiple Sclerosis.
When on when did Quack Skipper admit to false positives in PEth testing? That dillweed has most monitoring boards convinced that PEth false positives are IMPOSSIBLE. Anyone caught his photo? Looks like Screech with a hormone condition.

1. You’re right, info is conflicting. By some standards a 121 is a low positive. Peth is absolutely worthless in the context of your overall drinking habits by itself. Period. You WONT find a learned opinion that it is.

2. Trusty old Lab Corps recently produced a positive test like yours and it wasn’t the guy’s blood as shown with DNA testing... so there’s that.

3. Greg Skipper talks a lot about individual PLD variance that affects these results. Ted Shultz talks a lot about individual hematocrit variance that also affects results. I’m certain your PLD levels and hematocrit weren’t recorded at the time of your test...

4. I’ll private message you so you can get in touch with me if you wish. I can provide you with expert opinions concerning PETH testing that might sway the GAL to the inefficacy of this sham test.

I was a heavy drinker for months and quit 23 days ago and haven't had anything. I have a PETH test tomorrow and want to know if I can do anything to lower it. I read that I can give blood and that might help. I have a double red blood cell donation set up tomorrow at 2:15 and have to get the PETH test done by 4:30. Will this do any good? I also wanted to know if drinking lots of water or lemon juice can help to clean out the liver and maybe give better results. Any advice on this would help. Also does working out help to clean out the system.

I have had high blood pressure and low red blood cells. I also had elevated liver enzymes, but now they are back to normal.

I also have some OCD, anxiety and germaphobia and use hand sanitizer sometimes like 50 times a day as I'm an uber eats driver and I'm constantly touching doors and different stuff in restaurants so when I get back in the car I usually squirt some on my hands to sanitize them. Can that effect the results any? I also read that using red wine vinaigrette can effect the results. Is any of that true?

Even if I was drinking up to 18 hard seltzers a day before that for a few months and haven't drank in 23 days will I show postive or negative on a PEth test?

Will Donating double red blood cells help to lower anything with new blood cells being made? Will the red blood cells be recreated that fast if I only have a couple of hours between donation and the test?

I'm really glad I'm not drinking anymore, but I'm worried my past will show up on the test. I quit drinking on Jan 6th. Is there anything I can do to cleans myself more today before I have to do this test this afternoon?

Hi @gitball, first of all, congratulations on quitting drinking for 23 days!
You'll notice that I moved your message to this discussion group where people are talking about the PEth test.

How did the test go?

Hydrating can’t hurt but I’m not sure how quickly it effects your HCT levels. This test isn’t normalized, so it matters.

It’s not liver related at all, so liver things aren’t gonna help.

It really also depends on just how heavy a drinker you were. At three weeks, you’re likely ok.

Of course VERY important is who is interpreting this test. If they’re the standard “this level means that” idiot, yikes. It’s not a stand alone indicator of ANYTHING.

Good afternoon - I have been trying to find out how I have one PEth test that shows positive for alcohol when I have not had a drink in over a year. Here is the funny part - at the same time as the PEth test, I also took a urine test which was negative, a hair test which was also negative and was wearing a SCRAM ankle monitor which has never been positive, no tampering, etc. I took the PEth test in early December of 2021 and had the SCRAM monitor on since June of 2021 and there was never a positive reading. I had another PEth test done that showed negative. However, on this one particular PEth test, it shows this astronomical number of 613 which is crazy as I have not had any alcohol. I do have endometriosis and diverticulitis. I have a lot of intestinal and GI issues and things like that, so I am wondering if that could have done it. Every other test was negative plus I have on an ankle monitor.

Just as a note - this was done for a professional evaluation.

Thank you for any assistance.

Not knowing all the medications you take for you ailments I recommend you look up all your medications on Google and look for medication interactions related testing. Also obtain the technical data for the specific test you reference to see if they show any potential interference from other materials.

There is not any documentation like that relative to PETH. It’s not FDA approved, nor does anyone care. It’s junk science snake oil, plain and simple.
