Other causes of failed PEth test for alcohol abuse?

Posted by gjones1956 @gjones1956, Nov 14, 2017

My daughter undergoes periodic peth testing for alchohol abuse. She fails regularly, although swears she drinks NOTHING. We have reason to believe she is telling the truth. Assuming she is indeed not drinking, is there a physical condition or ailment that might produce positive peth tests? She is 29, has enlarged lymph nodes, some kind of mysterious condition that gives her severe hives, etc. We are wondering if some type of autoinflammation or autoimmune condition might explain elevated levels. Our daughter is FINALLY discussing this with her regular doctor but if it is some unusual condition a specialist will be needed. The reason the peth test is required is due to a nasty custody dispute with lots of allegations of misconduct. I just want to know if there is ANYTHING other than alchohol consumption that can lead to positive test results. Any thoughts or knowledge of cases? Thanks for reading.

Please help I had four 7% alcoholic drinks (355 ml) and 2 10% 12 oz margarita can drinks in approximately 6 hours 3/22. I will have a peth test likely 3/28 or 3/29. I donated one pint of blood 3/25. I am 5’1” and 160#. What are my chances of passing under 20. I had nothing to drink months prior.

Welcome @agbear, While we wait for others with experience with the testing to reply, here is some information on the topic - How Long Does Alcohol Stay in Your System?: https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment/how-long-in-system

Good afternoon - I have been trying to find out how I have one PEth test that shows positive for alcohol when I have not had a drink in over a year. Here is the funny part - at the same time as the PEth test, I also took a urine test which was negative, a hair test which was also negative and was wearing a SCRAM ankle monitor which has never been positive, no tampering, etc. I took the PEth test in early December of 2021 and had the SCRAM monitor on since June of 2021 and there was never a positive reading. I had another PEth test done that showed negative. However, on this one particular PEth test, it shows this astronomical number of 613 which is crazy as I have not had any alcohol. I do have endometriosis and diverticulitis. I have a lot of intestinal and GI issues and things like that, so I am wondering if that could have done it. Every other test was negative plus I have on an ankle monitor.

Just as a note - this was done for a professional evaluation.

Thank you for any assistance.

These tests are prone to false positives and it should be repeated in view that all your other tests were negative, which shows how beneficial multiple comparative tests can be.

My husband is waiting to have a liver transplant. He has had nothing to drink since 2019. Has had several peth tests that were negative. Had recent transfusions with blood and plasma and used the swish and swallow mouthwash and now they are saying his peth test is positive (barely but positive). This can prevent him from getting a liver. Please send any peer reviewed articles but the doctor says there has not been a false positive peth.

Exactly same happened to us ! My husband is in the hospital right now . They were about to put him on transplant list but false positive peth test came in and they just letting him die there ! His kidneys are not working . Few more days and he will need kidneys transplant . So devastating! They still saying that hand sanitizers, mouth wash , rubbing alcohol are not affecting the peth test !

They probably aren’t. False positives happen by another mechanism.

Hello all - especially pilots
There are a lot of cases involving false positive PEth tests, especially for pilots. Different circumstances, different legal actions, but quite a few of us aviation lawyers are looking at this issue. In addition to not being used properly, there are also issues involving offlabel use, failure to follow chain of custody protocols, and failure to follow rigorous DOT testing protocols. Stay tuned and keep following the developing story. There are some networks out there which connect people, and two good books on the The HIMS Nightmare and the HIMS Experiment Exposed -- they touch on a lot.

To all that is in this similar situation. I took a PETH test it came up positive and I haven’t had any alcohol to drink since 2019. Man I’m walking around in a daze trying to figure out how this could happen! I mean I’m searching the internet hours and hours at a time to see if I can find some information! My PETH results was 38 and I can’t consume any alcohol I’m about to lose my profession and I don’t know how to fight it because of my history! The same day I took a breathe, urine hair and 2 vials of blood was drawn plus the Peth test. All was negative except the Peth and they didn’t test the blood in the vials they did the finger pricking and ran with that! I know this is a false positive because I haven’t had anything to drink! I take random drug screenings since I was positive in 2019 for alcohol, when I go to my planned evaluation to get off the probation this happens! HOW DO YOU GET PASS THIS WHEN YOU KNOW YOU HAVEN’TBEEN DRINKING
