Diastolic dysfunction and resulting a-fib

My doctor wants to add a beta blocker to control my blood pressure. Mayo research suggests that's a mistake for someone with diastolic dysfunction (DD), which I may have (based on BP readings in recent months). I'd like to hear from anybody who has been diagnosed with DD about symptoms and treatments.

I owe everybody on this thread -- especially @hopeful33250, @dawn_giacabazi, and @cynaburst -- an update on my Diastolic Dysfunction after visiting with my cardiologist a few days ago. He told me A-fib is the very definition of DD, which is now a condition I probably can't avoid, and after 2 years of it, I have learned to manage it. Since I have no tangible symptoms (other than a tendency to bleed from wounds, thanks to Coumadin therapy) he saw no reason for surgery and believes no medication would "cure" me. So management is the challenge, and he flatly stated that I need not fear trying a beta blocker in that effort. So my nephrologist prescribed carvedilol to bring my blood pressure down, starting with a minimal dose, possibly raising it over the next six weeks in hope of reaching a maximum positive (balanced) result.

Does this make sense to you? Do you have any suggestions for me based on your experience?

Hi Martin
Recently I started having high Diastolic numbers and feel nauseated or tired. Cardiologist tried 24 monitor and couldn’t find any afib

What additional tests should I ask him to conduct ?

My DP hovering around 90 and I feel nauseated when it does and can’t even do small things

Hi, @houston2818. Sorry to say I have no immediate answers to your question about additional tests related to Diastolic Dysfunction. My situation has changed in many ways since that discussion 6 years ago, including a small stroke from A-fib. I'm about to enter a new set of diagnosis tests this week, and that will involve Nephrology, Urology, Cardiology, and Endocrinology (in reverse order). I will dust off my DD concerns and keep them at the ready in the next several weeks. If I come up with any promising information, I'll get back to you right away. Incidentally, bear in mind that DD is a problem for lots of people who aren't dealing with A-fib. Martin

Does anyone have familiarity with diastolic dysfunction? I just had an echo done and it resulted in that as well thickened left ventricle and showing my mitral valve was moderately thickened. My family practitioner mentioned to get another echo in a year and see what it shows again. The report said that only my mitral valve could be shown on the echo which I thought was odd - what about my other valves? ?!!. Im wondering if I should go see a cardiologist.

Hello< I am a 49 year old Female that has just been Diagnosed with Diastolic Dysfunction. My heart was fine until after I had the Moderna vaccine. I had no issues nothing and then after that I started swelling and went to the Dr and the did a cardiac panel on my. She said my BNP was 253 and she put me on a water pill 80 mgs. I then had it checked again after the 2 months and my BNP is 30. I am so scared and my diet has gotten worse as I have been anxiety eating and drinking. I have a Cardiologist appt in 2 weeks. I am scared and do not know how to handle this and this itself has put a ton of stress on me. I cant get myself settled.

Hi everyone! I just received my results from my echo and it shows Abnormal left ventricular diastolic filling is observed, consistent with impaired LV relaxation... It also says The mitral valve leaflets are mildly thickened and there is mild mitral regurgitation observed - the jet appears to be eccentric. There is mild tricuspid regurgitation.. anyone have this or know what it all means?

I have the same but i dont believe I have regurgutation. Im so clueless to all of this and worried all the time.

Hi @brendalee513. Glad to hear you're set up with a cardiologist next month. To help you prepare for the appointment, you might get some help from this article: https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/bnp-an-important-new-cardiac-test. My diastolic dysfunction is from A-fib and thickening of my left ventricle as well as hypertension, but my medical team has done a good job of keeping me "on the road." If you can develop a half-dozen good questions for your cardiologist to answer, you'll join me as a "sometime survivor" who doesn't worry as much about what's coming. Martin

Welcome, @artistanne. It can be alarming to hear that you have diastolic dysfunction. I moved your message to this existing discussion that @predictable started quite a while back and members continue to contribute to:
- Diastolic dysfunction and resulting a-fib: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/diastolic-dysfunction-and-resulting-a-fib/

I did this so you can read the previous helpful posts that I think you'll appreciate reading as well to help you connect easily with fellow members who have been there like @houston2818 @brendalee513 @dh38 @bjanderson and more.

What has your cardiologist suggested for you, Anne?
