Suggestions for an adjustable weighted vest for bone strengthening?

Posted by fiesty76 @fiesty76, Jan 23, 2021

I think it was a member of this forum who mentioned having a vest that could have added weights added. If so, could that person or others who have one recommend a specific brand of vest to purchase? I am off Reclast at present for my osteoporosis and am interested in add more weight bearing help. Thank you.

@fiesty76 here's and article from the American Bone Health site that talks about weighted vests.

@johnbishop, Thank you so much! There are many varieties listed at Amazon and so I appreciate, as always, your help with providing more information. As an older, under weight female, I only know I should start with something comfortable and pretty light. Will read the article with great interest. You deserve at least 3 hugs/day from each of your many grateful followers. 3 giant, gentle cybers on their way!!

@johnbishop That was an interesting article, John. Thanks for providing that information.

@johnbishop, After reading the helpful Am. Bone Health article, John, I understand that while weighted vests might prove helpful for some, there are good reasons to talk with my doc before trying one for myself. Balance, percentage of weight to add and fit are factors that I'd not given enough thought to. Thank you.

I have severe osteoporosis and am more scared of the treatments than I am of breaking a bone. Does anyone have experience with the idea of wearing extra weight to keep bones strong?

There is a lot of information if you Google - the trick is to drill down to the facts/science, not the sales ads. Here is one discussion: https://americanbonehealth.org/exercise/weighted-vests-for-bone-health/
There are some other studies, too. All of them rely on:
- Concurrence by your physician
- Long-term adherence to a weight-bearing exercise routine while wearing the vest. The studies cite a 3X/week jumping exercise - if your osteoporosis is severe, it may not be for you.
- Other non-drug management strategies - diet, stop smoking, etc
- Careful fitting, and proper amount of weight.

In other words, just like every other therapy or treatment, it is an active process, not just a matter of putting on the vest. The best way to start would be to find a PT who deals with osteoporosis, to design a treatment based on your body, and to fit the vest for you.

Please let us know if you decide to try it - it would be wonderful to have a non-pharma option.

This is exactly is what’s going on with me. So scared of treatments for. I can’t believe in the age that we live that there isn’t someone who couldn’t come out with a med safer without all the horrible side effects. It’s sad. Thank you for info on vests. I would agree you need to find help in making this decision also. God bless all of you.

Okay, I'm on a mission to attack Osteoporosis without medication! After a horrendous experience with osteo meds that are not guaranteed to begin with I've decided to attack this Osteoporosis with diet and exercise!!! If any of you have experience traveling "up" this road jump on in here. I'm a vegetarian with a ton of autoimmune and food allergies and have implemented high calcium food items into my regime. I also purched a weighted vest at the suggestion of a PA. According to my PA we cannot make bone without weight, our own or other. I'm thin and need some additional weight. I have just begun this journey and will see how things progress. Keep me in prayer as I do all of you battling this. Thanks!

How many pounds are you adding? I ask because I added
5-lb weights to my daily walks about a month ago, and now I have some knee pain. So… go slow!

Hi @colleen67, Dr. Loren Fishman has a yoga program and an ongoing study to build bone density. Google Dr. Loren Fishman "12 Poses vs Osteoporosis." @johnbishop posted the link, but I'm not sure what topic it's under. I've been cautioned about weighted vests causing fractures so be careful...
