Adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder: What helps?

Posted by Chris, Volunteer Mentor @auntieoakley, Jul 30, 2019

About 4 months ago I was diagnosed with a frozen shoulder, the doctor said take nsaids which I was already taking. Then I had a hospital stay for prancreatitis, complicated by a perforating ulcer and was told it was from nsaids and never to take them again. So here I am responsible for everything over 5 lbs at our house with a shoulder that just never stops hurting. Into my elbow, into my collarbone, and into my neck. Nothing really helps, not ice, not heat, not creams or lidocaine. Does anyone have suggestions for me. The doctor said it would resolve itself in one to three years but in another month I will be ready to cut it off myself.

@auntieoakley, Good evening, Welcome. I am so sorry that you are having pain from a frozen shoulder. As you probably know, frozen shoulder happens because of immobility. The fascia which surrounds the joint area becomes compressed and restricted. Although I have never had that happen to me after any of the four shoulder surgeries, I was warned about it by the orthopedic surgeon.

You asked for suggestions and I am going to attempt to give that my best shot. In order to remove the restrictions, you may want to try Myofascial Release Therapy, MFR. It is a gentle way to release restrictions. You may also be taught the at-home treatments that you can do between sessions.

There is a discussion group on Connect that may be of additional help.
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/myofascial-release-therapy-mfr-for-treating-compression-and-pain/

There are multiple levels of certification for MFR therapists. The Expert level is the highest proficiency with specialized training in most areas of the body.
If you decide that you would like to contact an MFR therapist there is a registry on the following website:
https://myofascialrelease.com/

If there is no one listed in your area, you may find an answer on this site:
https://www.myofascialrelease.com/treatment/centers/sedona/

or....since, not all MFR therapists are listed, you can just let me know where you are located and I will do my best to acquaint you with MFR therapists in your vicinity. May you soon be free of suffering. Chris

Daily Physical Therapy! I was motivated to play in a golf tournament in 2 months so that's how long it took me. My husband made a pulley I attached to the door - pull down with one hand to pull up the arm with the frozen shoulder. The best one is called the Spider. Walk your hand up the wall as far as you can, then step back and stretch the arm. Then do it again. Keep stretching. It will eventually break up that frozen bursa. Good luck!

@colely @auntieoakley @kilh Update: I had a cortisone injection recently and it has really helped. The constant, distracting pain is pretty much gone. I'll be seeing a physical therapist soon to learn some coping strategies and keep up my muscle strength, although I don't expect to cure the condition that way. (@igl Thank you for the suggestion. I did try the "spider" exercise at one point and found it excruciating. It's not right for me.)

@russet3 Thanks for your reply. I am glad your pain is getting less. Due to my hospital journey, I am now 7 months behind on my shot. Boy, am I paying for that now. That is missing almost three shots. Started PT with Mercy Virtual at home. She brought up the spider exercise and how good it is for my ROM. I really need to get to my Ortho doc for my shot, due every three months. PT does really help but have to keep it up and not stop, continuing it at home is good.
Stay healthy and it will get better in time. KLH

I had a neck injury but the result was a frozen shoulders and many physical therapies did not help-one PT person tore my rotator cuff. The thing that
finally helped was shoulder surgery with a surgeon who only did shoulders.
it took 6 months to regain full use but it did the trick. Now 20 years later I have to be careful with that shoulder but it is very functional. Hope you find
the answer to your situation as it is very painful.

Have you tried a steroid injection. I've been having horrible hip pain and today I've finally found a pain clinic that is going to give me one.

Nothing for nothing but when my shoulder seized up from a previous injury I took hot hot showers a lot of them snd used muscle relief an essential oil from Eden’s garden. I cannot express the relief and it helped it so much snd healed it too.
